What is hemp biomass?

This the organic material from the hemp plant. It is composed of the cellulose and lignin. Generally, it is the entire hemp plant, including the roots, stems, leaves, and flowers. Hemp Biomass is highly valuable because it is used for the production of renewable energy.

Although the hemp biomass has numerous benefits, it has a number of drawbacks.

The major benefits of CBD hemp biomass are:

  1. Renewable and Sustainable Energy. Hemp biomass is the cheapest source of renewable source of energy. According to the study, 1 ½ to 3 ½ h hectares of hemp could replace the use of fossil fuels in Canada. This means no Sulphur Oxide is released into the atmosphere. Minimal chemicals such as pesticides are used in the hemp IHF farms. Therefore, hemp biomass is friendly and safe for the environment.
  2. Hemp biomass is highly versatile. Other than production of energy, it can be used to make hemp fibers, clothing, hemp papers, hemp plastics, and numerous hemp food products.

The following is the ugly truth about the hemp biomass.

  1. Health Hazards

When burnt, the hemp biomass has negative implications on human health. Being a crop with high biomass, the hemp plant intakes a lot of carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. This high amount of carbon is stored in the stem and the leaves of the hemp plant. Therefore, the hemp biomass contains approximately 40% of the carbon.

When a kilogram of hemp biomass is burnt, it produces approximately 1515 grams of carbon dioxide and other compounds into the atmosphere. When inhaled, they have negative effects on human health. If a ton of hemp biomass is burnt, the effects on the environment will be adverse.

  1. The Legal Hurdles

Despite its numerous benefits, the industrial cultivation of the hemp plant is illegal in many countries. This is because it is often mistaken for recreational cannabis (marijuana) that contains psychoactive compounds (THC). However, in the recent past, many countries have started realizing the benefits of CBD hemp plant and lifted the ban. Companies have started investing in industrial cultivation of hemp. An example of companies involved in large scale production of hemp is the IHF hemp biomass.

  1. Air Pollution

Although the CBD hemp biomass is by far much better than other energy sources.  Other sources are wind, fossil fuels and solar. Hemp biomass can be readily available and effective. However, it can emit greenhouse gases. These gases are methane, carbon monoxide and nitrous oxide that are produced during the production and processing of the hemp biomass.

  1. Unpredictability in Production and Storage

The CBD hemp biomass has numerous benefits. The production is quite low due to legal restrictions in many countries. The major producers of industrial hemp is China and Canada. The production process, harvesting and the storage process of the hemp biomass is expensive and time-consuming. Thus most companies will opt for fossil fuels.

  1. Hemp vs. Marijuana

The primary reasons for growing industrial hemp is for the production of oil, seeds, fiber, fuel, energy among other benefits. Marijuana is often grown for the production of recreational products. These two plants look similar when grown. The fears are if hemp is legalized, quacks will take advantage and grow marijuana plants instead.

The CBD hemp biomass has the capacity to transform the use of energy. However, a few measures should be looked at to ensure the safe use of CBD hemp biomass.
