I still remember the first time I read a book by Jodi Picoult.  I had gotten “My Sisters Keeper” as a gift, and it is an incredible book.  I was so moved, and it left a lasting impression.  It was just one of many of Picoult’s books that I would read over the years.

Jodi Picoult Small Great Things

I was excited to dig into “Small Great Things”.  Released in 2016, this book tackles a lot of issues that are current topics.  As soon as I started reading, I was drawn into the storyline.  As a busy parent, I don’t have a lot of time to read, and this book kept me riveted.  I was able to read a few chapters at a time and then pick up where I left off.

Ruth Jefferson is a labor and delivery nurse at a Connecticut hospital with more than twenty years’ experience. During her shift, Ruth begins a routine checkup on a newborn, only to be told a few minutes later that she’s been reassigned to another patient. The parents are white supremacists and don’t want Ruth, who is African American, to touch their child. The hospital complies with their request, but the next day, the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone in the nursery. Does she obey orders or does she intervene? (JodiPicoult.com)

I was drawn into the story right away.  Picoult does an amazing job of telling you about each character, changing perspectives in different chapters.  The brilliant part of her books is that as simple as things may seem, they never are.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, from tough topics to heartwarming moments.
