We have been to the Yucatan in Mexico many times, and have had many different experiences. We have stayed at resorts, to small AirBnBs, to the roadless island of Holbox and off the beaten path. During our travels, we have had a lot of memorable times. Here are some things I have learned!

Watch for topes! Seriously..

All around Mexico there are speed bumps called topes. Some of these are a little bump, and some are huge. The cars in Mexico are more often small than large, so when we have rented a car, we have learned some lessons along the way. Topes are no joke and when you’re entering a town or a busy area, keep an eye out for topes. The large ones, especially ones that have scrapes on them, can be bad news. As careful as we are, there are a few that have resulted in what felt like the car slamming down.

Hydrating drinks on a store shelf

Drink a lot of electrolytes

One our last trip to Mexico, we were feeling dehydrated and noticed there is a lot of “Electrolit” and other brands of pedialyte type drinks on the shelves. Often, these are on a flashy end-cap display. Then we noticed that there were lots of people drinking Electrolit, from tourists to people living in town. It’s hot — stay hydrated!

Washer / dryer covers are a thing

We stayed in some AirBnbs, and the washing machines and dryers have covers on them. I wasn’t quite sure why, but that’s a thing.

A lot of foods are spicy

Everywhere you go, lots of foods are spicy. It is easy to spot red, spicy cheetos and bags marked “fuego”. However, even what looked like regular Doritos turned out to be spicy. Spicy Cheetos? Fritos? Potato Chips? Takis? You got it.

You might have to pay for toilet paper

Be prepared for the possibility that you have to buy a piece of toilet paper at public venues!

Coca Cola

There is Coca Cola everywhere. And plenty of types of cola and Coke trucks and factories. It is really good, since it is made with sugar cane.

Everywhere we went and stopped for snacks, there was always Coke. Many places have Coke in old fashioned glass bottles that have been reused many times.

You’ll see interesting flora and fauna

You won’t see jaguars! But you will see coatis, agoutis, and other creatures you aren’t used to seeing.
