Getting a horse can be a great idea for quite a few reasons, especially when you’ve been riding for years. But, being able to have one at home and actually look after a horse takes a lot more time and effort than many people realize.

While you’ll always have to put the time and effort into it, this doesn’t have to be overwhelmingly stressful. With a few tips, it could be more straightforward than you would’ve thought.

Put Boundaries Around Their Space

You’ll already know you’ll need quite a bit of space for your horse. And, this could be broken up into different areas, like a feeding area and somewhere to exercise. You’ll need to have some kind of boundaries in place for this. It helps make sure your horse doesn’t accidentally wander off when you’re not there.

Thankfully, putting this together doesn’t need to be too hard. It’s just a matter of giving your horse enough space and investing in horse fencing and similar options. You’ll have it put together in no time.

Don’t Forget About Shelter

Speaking of putting together a space for your horse, don’t overlook a shelter while you’re at it. They’ll need constant access to somewhere they can be dry, warm, and comfortable, and that’ll protect them from the elements year-round. Put this together as early as possible, and make sure it’s actually suitable for your horse.

At a minimum, it should be a well-built, three-sided structure your horse can go to whenever they want. You’ll also have to clean this regularly because of the wear and tear your horse, and the weather, will put it through.

Stick to a Routine

There’ll be quite a lot to do when you want to make sure your horse is healthy and happy, so it’s easy to see why it could feel overwhelming. But, creating a checklist and sticking to a routine makes this much easier. You’ll need to focus on a few specific areas when you’re doing this.

Feeding times are one of the more important here, as it helps prevent colic and similar issues. Don’t overlook the more irregular tasks, either, like taking your horse for check-ups and similar medical appointments.

Be Aware of Parasites

Horses are regularly exposed to intestinal worms and other parasites during the day, no matter how much time and effort you might put into preventing it. It’s worth taking the right steps to make sure you don’t need to worry about these parasites affecting your hose. This should be relatively straightforward.

Your horse’s vet or equine practitioner should prescribe an anti-parasite regimen to help with this. While this can seem complicated at first, it gets easier and easier as time goes on. And, you’ve no reason not to put the effort into it.

You’ll need to know how to look after a horse if you plan on having them at home or on your property. While this takes a lot of time and effort, it shouldn’t have to be as much of a hassle as you’d think.
