We have had guinea pigs for many years, and we have use a lot of different products with them. From supplies to food, it is always a learning experience. We always make sure our piggies have fresh hay, and I was happy to discover the Small Pet Select Sampler Hay box. Guinea pigs can be surprisingly picky, and it is nice to have a sampler to see what they like best and to offer a variety of different options.

The box comes neatly packed, and it is nice to have a hay delivery. I am so busy that it is a challenge to have to run errands and grab supplies for the house, kids, pets, etc.
The box is divided into four sections, so you can work your way through the different types, one by one or set up as a sampler for your piggies (or rabbit). All of the hay is a great quality, with soft textures and green color. We have bought hay that is stiff and yellow, and the guinea pigs end up rejecting it. We have tried other hay from Small Pet Select and they always have great quality hay!

The first two cuts of Timothy Hay are a nice comparison of how hay can differ during different cycles. The 2nd cutting is greener and softer, whereas the 3rd cutting is darker.
The oat hay is interesting, as it actually has oats attached and is ia much different texture.

The orchard hay is somewhat similar to the timothy hay, but is a great alternative if you are allergic. I noticed this was softer, very green, and flat.

There are four types of hay in this box: 2nd cut Timothy hay, 3rd cut Timothy hay, Oat hay, Orchard hay
I was interested to try out the box and see what our piggies would think of it!
If you’re wondering how the hay types in our sampler box compare to other types of hay, we’re here to help. We explain many of the different types of hay here, but to summarize, the most common types are Timothy hay (1st, 2nd, and 3rd cutting), alfalfa hay, orchard hay, and oat hay. Different types of hay have different characteristics, so it’s important to understand the profiles of each to meet your pet’s needs.

The guinea pigs seemed to enjoy all of the hay! I can’t say I can tell which hay is their favorite, since each type of hay is great quality. The guinea pigs start squealing as soon as they hear us getting some hay for them.

This is perfect for guinea pigs. We used to have them, but they sadly died. They sure did love their hay though.
What a smart way to get bedding for the animal. I like that this hay is made from oats.
Wow! Looks amazing, such interesting quality of product that can use in our pet, cool and creative things to made.
This would be a smart choice for your pet. I honestly didn’t even realize hay samplers were available. I like that it’s natural and made from oats, which makes it a safe and comfortable bedding option for animals.
This was such a helpful review, especially for pet owners trying to figure out which hay their little animals actually prefer. I love the idea of a sampler box because guinea pigs and rabbits can be surprisingly picky, so being able to test different varieties first makes a lot of sense. It’s great to hear that all four types were fresh and high quality, and it sounds like your piggies had a fun taste-testing experience.
This is such a great idea for pet owners! I love that the sampler lets you see which type of hay your guinea pigs prefer instead of committing to one big bag right away.
This hay sounds great. I think it’s important for our critters to get a variety of foods in their diet. This is a great way to do that.
Sounds like the piggies are definitely having a major treat fest. I like the idea of hay-eating creatures getting a nice variety.
Your post brought back memories of when my kids had guinea pigs as pets. Thus was over 20 years ago and my kids loved theur pets so much that we ended up buying three. The females had babies and we were able to gift other kids in their school with the extra guinea pigs. Eating hay was always a hit!

A hay sampler is a great idea! It is interesting to see what kinds of hay are their favorites.
I had no idea a hay sampler box was even a thing, but this honestly makes so much sense. Being able to see what your guinea pigs actually enjoy before buying more is such a good idea, and it sounds like the quality was really nice across all four kinds. Your piggies looked very happy with it.
Even though yours seemed to like all of the options, this is a great way to figure out which one they like most so you have happy pets!
