Ever since I first dreamed of the Himalayas, I imagined standing at the foot of Mount Everest. Earlier this year, I made that dream real with Highland Expeditions, choosing their Luxury Everest Base Camp trek.

From the moment I landed in Kathmandu to my helicopter descent from Gorakshep, the experience was seamless, breathtaking, and unforgettable.

Arrival in Kathmandu

Kathmandu greeted me with its energy, chaos, and charm. Highland Expeditions arranged my airport pickup, hotel stay, and a brief orientation. I spent the evening exploring Thamel, tasting momos, and preparing mentally for the adventure ahead.

Flight to Lukla and Trek to Phakding

The early morning helicopter flight to Lukla was thrilling and convenient. Most trekkers have to drive 5 hrs to Ramechap to catch a plane flight but our trip included a direct helicopter flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Flying over snow-capped peaks and deep valleys made my heart race. Landing at Lukla helipad was an adventure in itself.

From Lukla, the trek began. Walking to Phakding through pine forests and along the Dudh Koshi River felt magical. The pace was relaxed, allowing me to ease into the altitude.

Namche Bazaar and Acclimatization

Reaching Namche Bazaar was a milestone. The bustling Sherpa town offered shops, cafés, and stunning views. We scheduled a full acclimatization day, letting us explore the town and enjoy short hikes.

The luxury lodges were a huge relief. Heated beds, spacious room, warm showers, and hearty meals meant I could rest fully for the trek ahead.

Higher Altitude Trekking

Walking through Tengboche, Dingboche, and Lobuche, the altitude started to challenge me. My breath was shorter, and each step required effort. But the guides ensured the pace was comfortable, with frequent breaks and guidance on hydration.

Reaching Gorakshep, I felt accomplished. Staying in well-equipped lodges at such altitudes made a huge difference. Warm meals and cozy rooms allowed me to recover before the big morning: Kala Patthar sunrise.

The Sunrise at Kala Patthar

Waking at 3:30 a.m., I climbed Kala Patthar under a sky full of stars. When the sun rose over Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse, I felt overwhelmed with awe. This moment—watching the golden peaks light up the Himalayas—is something I will never forget.

Helicopter Descent from Gorakshep

Instead of the long, exhausting descent, our guiding company arranged a helicopter ride back to Kathmandu via Lukla. Flying over glaciers, valleys, and villages I had passed on foot was surreal. It saved hours of trekking while offering breathtaking aerial views.

The helicopter descent made the trek feel luxurious yet still adventurous. I still experienced the challenge of high-altitude trekking but with comfort and safety on the return.

Back to Kathmandu

Flying back to Kathmandu, I reflected on the journey. Every village, every bridge, and every mountain I walked past had left its mark. The whole team made the trip seamless, combining adventure with comfort.

Final Thoughts

The trek was the perfect combination of adventure and comfort. I got to experience Everest, walk through Himalayan valleys, and still return refreshed and safe.

For anyone who dreams of Everest but wants a little luxury and less strain, this trek is unforgettable. The mountains tested me, inspired me, and left me with memories that will last a lifetime.
