Honestly, I never considered hair extensions until recently because I always thought they were for celebrities, influencers, or other people with unlimited spending money (and ample free time to spend in a salon).  But after doing a little research, I discovered tape hair extensions and the benefits they offer.  My perspective was completely changed.

1) A Natural Look

I was worried that hair extensions would look fake and unnatural.  That was my biggest concern.  I didn’t want something that screamed “extensions.”  Fortunately, that’s not the case at all.  Most tape-in hair extensions are ultra-thin and lie flat against your scalp, allowing them to blend in seamlessly with your natural hair.  They actually don’t add much bulk and can flow with natural hair.  With human hair tape extensions, they can be imperceptible from your own hair.

2) Lightweight and Comfortable

Another assumption I had about hair extensions was that they must feel heavy.  Apparently, they do not (at least not the quality tape-in extensions).  They’re thinner than other types of extensions and distribute the weight across a wider surface area.  Other types of extensions can be heavier because of bulky hanging points or clips.  After a few days, most people forget they’re even there.

This was quite reassuring, because comfort is key.

3) Quick and Efficient Application

Some types of extensions can involve sewing, beads, clips, or other complicated techniques.  In a salon setting, tape-ins can be much quicker, allowing you to get in and out without sitting there all day.

This is faster than traditional methods because the stylist just sandwiches thin sections of your hair between two adhesive strips.  This really streamlines the process, making it much more manageable.

4) Reusable and Cost-Effective

This epiphany was key for me.  For some reason, I assumed that tape-in extensions were not reusable.  Not true for tape-in extensions.  They can be removed, re-taped, and reapplied multiple times (as long as you care for them properly).

If they were one-off products, the cost would seem high.  But since they’re reusable and can last a long time, the price is actually quite reasonable.

5) Gentle on Natural Hair (When Applied Properly)

I was afraid that taping something to my hair might cause damage to my hair, such as leaving behind residue or causing my hair to break.  After a bit of research, I learned that tape in extensions cause less damage than other methods because they don’t require any damaging heat, tight braiding, or harsh chemicals to bond the extensions to your hair.  Because of this, tape-in extensions are considered low risk and hair-friendly.

Just to be clear, proper application, preparation, and care are important.  Brushing and maintenance visits to the salon will help the extensions last a long time and protect your natural hair from damage.

6) Versatile Styling Options

If you’re someone who likes to switch hairstyles, tape-in extensions are for you (f they’re made from high-quality human hair).  They can be curled, straightened, and styled just like your hair.  Ponytails, waves, and sleep looks are also possible when positioned correctly.  I was shocked at how versatile they are.

7) Ideal for Adding Both Length and Volume

Even though tape-in extensions are thin, they can also be used to add length and volume.  Sure, you can have mermaid-length extensions for a dramatic look, but people with fine or flat hair can also add them to provide volume and body without adding extra length.  This makes them suitable for adding a subtle boost or for making a complete transformation.

Maintaining Tape-In Extensions

So you’ve decided to have your stylist install tap-in extensions and want them to last.  What should you do to maintain them?  These are some easy maintenance steps to get you started:

  • Always use sulphate-free shampoos
  • Don’t apply oils or heavy conditioners near the tape bonds.  (This can weaken the adhesive)
  • Brush gently with an extension-friendly brush
  • Keep up with your salon maintenance appointments

Drumroll… Are they worth it?

If you value comfort and versatility, they certainly are.  That’s why tape-in extensions have become so popular.

I was surprised at how natural-looking, thin, lightweight and reusable they are. You can easily achieve fuller or longer hair without committing to other complicated or expensive products.  These are a great modern option.

Hopefully, now that you understand how they work, how simple they are, and how non-intimidating they are, like me, you’ll consider tape-in extensions.
