We have been to Mexico numerous times, both at resorts and road trips. It is good to be as prepared as possible when it comes to travel, so here are some things that we found to be good necessities to bring along.
Spinner luggage
A spinner carry-on is a great way to go when it comes to traveling. You can pack your essentials and have them with you right on the plane. We always make sure we have with us (not checked) just in case something happens to our checked luggage. We bought spinner luggage after traveling with our kids, because realistically, it is good to have luggage that rolls so that you aren’t left having to carry heavy items.
Packing cubes
I always travel with packing cubes! This helps me to organize my own stuff, or I use color-coded cubes to organize the kids’ stuff (everyone has their own color cubes). The cubes help to keep like items together, like tops, bottoms, undergarments, etc. I also have a cube for shoes so that I have something to put them in (rather than getting dirt on other things).
Toiletry bag
Another must is a toiletry bag. I love the ones that open up and hang, so you can have everything conveniently organized.
Electronics storage
We bring a laptop case and bag for electronics, so that when we go through security, electronics are organized together (cameras, chargers, cords, etc). You can use something like a packing cube, or an electronics organizer.
Reef-safe sunscreen
Chances are, you are doing some swimming in Mexico. If you plan on going to the beach or cenote, you will need reef-safe sunscreen. Many places will check your sunscreen to make sure that it is reef-safe, and it is easier to bring it than being stuck buying it in Mexico. It is not only better for the environment, but also better for you.
Sun protection
Mexico can be quite hot and sunny, and sun gear is a must. There are lots of great products that offer UPF, from sunglasses to clothing with built in protection. Whether you are at the beach or exploring Mayan Ruins inland, it is good to be prepared.
Comfortable shoes & water shoes
If you are vacationing in Mexico, you will likely need some comfy shoes to make your travels go smoothly. Between the heat and often doing a lot of walking, this will come in use.
Also plan on bringing water shoes for water activities, whether you are going to the beach, cenotes, or water park (such as Xcaret or Xel-Ha).

I have always wanted to visit Mexico & this is a great packing checklist! I totally agree with the spinner luggage. It’s always safe to have stuff with you.
Mexico is so beautiful and a place I would love to revisit. Packing cubes can make such a big difference with packing and organisation. I think they are such a great travel essential!
I’ve never been to Mexico, but I have always wanted to go. I think it would be a fun vacation. Great tips you have here. I’ll make sure to keep these in mind if I’m ever able to go.

That was a really helpful post. I especially loved how you covered both practical safety items (like insect repellent and good sun protection) and the travel-document essentials (passport copies, cash, insurance). Thanks for giving such a well-rounded checklist, it makes prepping for a trip to Mexico feel a lot less stressful.

I have always wanted to visit Mexico. We don’t live far from it, but we haven’t made it yet. I’ll keep your tips in mind when we go.
I will definitely only bring only a carry on suitcase. My husband checked a bag when he went to Cuba and it got damaged.
