Winter break can be boring, especially for younger kids who want something to do. This can also be tough in the Capital Region, since it is typically cold and dreary in the winter. For many years, I did my best to keep my kids occupied during winter break. So here are some ideas to keep busy!

Via Aquarium Rotterdam

Via Aquarium

Via Aquarium is a great place to get out of the cold and see some great marine life. It is very kid-friendly, and is a nice change of scenery. This is a unique spot in the Capital Region, since we don’t have any other aquariums or zoos in the area.

Indoor Playgrounds / Trampoline Parks

At some point, the kids probably need to burn off some energy. Look up some indoor parks in the area, like Get Air or Sky Zone, where they can run around and be active.

Library

The library usually has programs for kids, like crafts or other events. See what they are offering, from story time to crafting.

Movies

The movies are always an option when there is nothing else to do. There are usually some family-friendly movies around the holidays.

Pottery Place

The Pottery Place or other ceramics places are a good place for kids to get creative.

Ice skating or Rollerskating

Skating is another great way to burn off some energy. There are both indoor and outdoor rinks, such as the Albany County Skating Facility. Some parks offer outdoor skating as well.

Bowling

Bowling is an easy option for getting out of the house and getting some entertainment.

Nature Centers

Nature centers offer a variety of activities. You can usually explore indoors exhibits, and then go on trails at places like the Albany Pine Bush. In the winter, many nature centers offer snowshoe rentals. This is a great time to try something new and burn off some energy.
