When you first begin on the adventure of styling your event, it’s important to take into consideration what you are doing and what kind of event you are hosting. In this guide from zkipster, they go through award ceremonies. While that may not be your goal or focus, these simple decorations and ideas will be a great way to bring some glamour and intrigue to the table.

Please note that many of these suggestions are handmade and take time and effort. This gives an added element of time, which means that you must plan ahead. Let’s dig in!

Crepe Flowers

One of the easiest pieces of decor that you can make with relative efficiency, once you get used to the process, is crepe or tissue paper flowers. All you need is scissors, tissue paper (or crepe paper), twine or string, and time. There are hundreds of tutorials, and they can be used in multiple ways. You can use these flowers as a centerpiece, a garland, and even as favors at the end of a pen!

White Sheets and Backlighting

Nothing beats a cheap RGB light and white sheets! White sheets are all too often either on sale or cheaper than sheets that have patterns and colors. Go to your local everything store like Wal-Mart or even use Amazon to find the right length of sheet. You may have to pay more for longer sheets, but just wait for the ambiance the combination creates. Add a small fan to flutter the sheets, and there you have it. This would work really well in a darker room, but if you want the same effect for a spring-like appearance, go for a floral printed sheet. The options are as endless as the patterns that you can find!

Floral Wall

While sheets are a great option, using fake flowers to create a daisy-chain wall is a great way to make a backdrop that can also be used as a photo opportunity. Now, the trick is to use dollar store or sale flowers if you want to go for the handmade option. However, you can find floral backdrops on sale at the end of spring in most stores and on Amazon. You just have to be ready to buy when the time comes around.

Use Natural Accents

If you have ever gone on a nature hike or walk and thought, “This is a cool stick,” then you know exactly what a natural accent is. Use dropped branches or cut branches with natural lichen and other fauna growing on them as natural accents. One of the best ways to use these accents is as centerpieces with some flowers and tea lights (preferably those with a battery to avoid a fire hazard).

Cardstock Cones with Crepe Paper

On average, crepe paper is roughly a dollar at most party stores unless you get the metallic types. Those can cost a bit more. Otherwise, grab about five colors and cut out little strips of crepe paper. Place a pencil eraser in the center of the paper and wrap the crepe paper upwards. Using a hot glue gun or quick-dry glue, attach the whorl of crepe paper at the base of the cone. Keep doing this in a tight spiral upwards, and there you have it, colorful mountains, funky peaks, or even horns! The options are endless when you start to use crepe paper and differing sizes of cardstock.

Dollar Stores, Craft Stores, and Amazon

When going for savings, finding clearance options or coupons is one of the greatest ways to find what you need for a much cheaper option than what you would find anywhere else. Stores like Hobby Lobby usually have items on clearance for anywhere from 30%-50% off!

Dollar stores are a crafters and decorators’ dream: an entire aisle, sometimes two, of miscellaneous things that can be used for centerpieces, garlands, backdrops, and so much more. This is a great place to start to get some ideas to figure out what you want to do.

While not everyone’s favorite place to shop, there are filters available on Amazon that can keep you under a certain price point or even help you find specific sales. There’s always an option with Amazon.

Bringing it All Together

Saving money usually means donating more time to the decor that you are doing. There are so many options for DIY decorations that it can be overwhelming. Write out your ideas, narrow down what you want to do, then take off on your DIY and smart shopping adventure.
