We are always looking for ways to be more eco-friendly in our household, from composting to using reusable bags. It is important to me to reduce my carbon footprint and to also be a role model for my kids. One of the things that is an easy swap is using an alternative to plastic straws. We have used some different types of straws, and most recently we have enjoyed using CornNext straws.

CornNext products are made with a corn-based material, which is biodegradable. It is great to be able to toss these in the compost bin when we are done using them! However, they are designed to naturally degrade in any environment, making it beneficial whether or not you put these in the compost.

Here are some of the great benefits of these straws (from the CornNext website):

  • Break down in as little as 30 days leaving behind zero microplastics.
  • Are crafted from one of America’s most abundant and renewable crops.
  • Deliver durability plus a surprising twist: natural fruit flavors (orange, strawberry, lemon, lime, blueberry, or unflavored) that pair perfectly with sparkling water, cocktails, or everyday drinks.
  • Carry a negative carbon footprint, a rare achievement in consumer goods.

There are many flavors of these straws, which make them a pretty cool option. The flavor isn’t strong, but it is nice addition to a drink. For example, the lemon adds a nice little touch to plain water.

There is also an unflavored option, if you don’t prefer having a flavor.

The straws work best with cold or room temperature beverages. These have been perfect for this summer’s hot weather.

I am also a fan of these since they do not pose any risk of microplastics!

We like to keep a bunch of these in the car, since we prefer these over paper straws for our drinks. Since they are individually wrapped in paper, it makes it easy to bring along for travel. This is a great option for when you are on the road, vacation, etc. While we do have some stainless straws at home, they aren’t always good for travel, since you have to be able to wash them with a special brush, dry them, and store them.

It is nice to be able to throw these right in the compost when we are done.

CornNext straws are a great option for straws. We aren’t a fan of paper straws, and it is nice to have an option that is biodegradable.
