The Pioneering Underwater Habitat Project

Have you heard of Vanguard? If you haven’t, then picture this- a UK company has successfully managed to create modular underwater habitats that may be used for almost everything from tourism and security to marine studies and research. Can you even imagine staying underwater for hours, days, weeks, and months at a time? That’s what’s in the works at DEEP, which is building these habitats for long-term sea exploration and occupation. 

The first such habitat, called Vanguard, will be launched by end-2025 and will test the ground for a more advanced Sentinel habitat project that will roll out in 2027. The former is more suitable for up to three people, while the latter can take up to six people for longer missions up to 28 days. Interestingly, it will have both dry and wet labs along with what is known as a moon pool. Even more fascinatingly, it’s being built by six robots with metal-wire 3D printing and will be configurable with stackable bunks and layers. DEEP is on a mission to make the ocean sexy, just like what happened with SpaceX and the possibilities of mainstream space travel. You could potentially check-in to an underwater living pod in the near future. Doesn’t it sound thrilling? You bet!
