We have been on several road trips around the Yucatan of Mexico, with our young children. We try to be as prepared as possible and consider different situations.
We have always rented from Avant Rent a Car in Cancun, and have not had any problems with the rental process or the cars.
Cash & ways to hide money
It is a good idea to have money with you when traveling to Mexico, for anything from gas to snacks. Some toll booths only take money as well (not credit cards).
However, you also have to be careful about money getting stolen. There have been stories of people being pulled over and their money being taken, among other things. So we are careful to hide money with us as well.
Dash cam
A dash cam is a good way to record what is going on in case something should happen.
Charging cables etc
We made sure to bring enough charging cables with us so we could charge our devices during our trip. This was important so that we could use google maps for navigation and also look up things during the drive.
Water
Mexico is generally hot, and it is a good idea to bring water with you. We usually buy a bunch of bottled water before heading out so that we know we have a usable source of water with us.
Sunscreen
Realistically, you will need sunscreen just about anywhere you go in Mexico, so it is a good idea to bring it. Consider a reef-safe sunscreen any time you are near a coastal area.
The water one is at the top of my list. I need to buy a dash camera for my trip.
Good to know what to bring. I’d love to go to Mexico sometime. I think water is always a must for going anywhere.
I had no clue that you needed to hide money while in Mexico. But at the same time it makes sense. I agree with taking plenty of drinking water. Because some water sources aren’t safe to drink while overseas.
Great list. I always worry I’ll forget my charging cords. And once I did forget sunscreen. Oops.
