Fall is a wonderful season to spend quality time with your family, enjoying the crisp air, vibrant colors, and festive atmosphere. Here are some free or inexpensive activities that you can enjoy together during the autumn months:
Camping, Nature Walks, Hikes, Nature Centers
Fall is a wonderful time to go on a hike. The weather is usually moderate, and it is the perfect time to enjoy viewing the fall foliage. You can also create a nature scavenger hunt.
While checking out hikes and walks, visit some nature centers and learn more about the local flora and fauna.
Fall can also be a lovely time for camping, with cool weather and enjoying fire pits.
Pumpkin Picking and Decorating
Visit a local pumpkin patch. Even if there’s an entry fee, it’s usually affordable and includes other activities like hayrides or corn mazes.
Instead of carving, decorate pumpkins with paint, markers, or stickers, which can be cheaper and safer for younger kids.
Visit a Local Farm
Many farms offer free or low-cost tours where you can see animals, pick apples, or learn about farm life.
Visit a farmers’ market to sample and purchase fresh, seasonal produce. This can be an educational and tasty outing for the whole family.
Fall Crafts
Use collected leaves to make art projects like leaf rubbings, collages, or homemade wreaths.
Create fall-themed decorations like garlands, centerpieces, or window displays using natural materials.
Baking and Cooking
Bake fall-themed treats like apple pie, pumpkin bread, or spiced cookies. Involve the kids in measuring, mixing, and decorating. Prepare meals together, including meals using seasonal ingredients (such as squash or apples).
Outdoor Activities
Rake leaves into piles and let the kids jump in them – the perfect classic and free fall activity that’s always a hit. Play outdoor games like touch football, soccer, or capture the flag in the cool fall weather.
Visit a Local Fair or Festival
Many towns have free or low-cost fall festivals with activities like face painting, live music, etc. Check out local fairs, which often feature rides, games, and seasonal food.
Reading
Visit your local library for fall-themed story hours, which are usually free. Read fall-themed books together at home. Create a cozy reading nook with blankets and pillows.
Volunteering
Participate in or organize a community clean-up event to pick up litter in local parks or neighborhoods. Join a charity walk, run, or fundraising event that often takes place during the fall.
Movie Nights
Host an outdoor movie night with a projector and blankets. Choose fall-themed or family-friendly movies. Have a cozy movie night indoors with popcorn, hot chocolate, and a selection of favorite films.
Visit a Local Museum or Historic Site
Many museums and historic sites have free or discounted entry days in the fall, and you might be able to enjoy some fall themed programs as well. For example, check out museums about the Salem Witch trials, or other fall or Halloween themed history.
These outings can be both fun and educational, providing a great way to learn about local history and culture.
Conclusion
Fall is filled with opportunities for family fun that won’t break the bank. From enjoying the beauty of nature to getting creative with crafts and cooking, these activities help create cherished memories without spending a lot of money. Embrace the season’s offerings and make the most of your time together with these free and cheap family activities.
I love your ideas. Reading is a big one for me. I try to do it every day! It relaxes me.
I especially love the idea of visiting local farms and getting creative with fall crafts. Can’t wait to try some of these with my kids!
We are heading out to a local farm this weekend to get some pumpkins….I love the Fall and finding lots of fun thing to to this time of the year 😉 Thanks for this list!
I’d love to visit a pumpkin patch or farm. I haven’t been to one in so long. When I lived in NC, we went on a haunted hayride it was so much fun. I don’t think they have anything like that here in Texas. I know there is a popular haunted house but I’m not exactly a fan. I want to go take some fall photos of the trees changing.
