I had no idea that there were lavender farms near me where I could go pick lavender, until recently. It was exciting to be able to check out an actual lavender farm and get to have an amazing experience.

It is good to be prepared when you go, so you can make the most of your visit. Here are some tips!

Go at peak picking times

Make sure you go when it is the best time of year for picking. You can check with your local farm to see what they recommend. This may also be there busy time of year, so realize that there may be some crowds as well. You can plan to go early when it is cooler and you may be able to beat the crowds.

Wear appropriate shoes and clothes

Dress appropriately – comfortable and also functional. It is a good idea to dress for the weather, including heat and sun. Be prepared for farm conditions, such as uneven ground, bugs, etc.

Know what to pick

There are different kinds of lavender, and also different stages of lavender growth, so know what to pick and have a plan in mind for how you are going to use it. For example, lavender for fragrance, versus culinary lavender.

Bringing kids

I brought my kids to the lavender farm, but it probably isn’t really something a lot of kids are going to be into. For example, it can be very hot, and there were a lot of bees. My kids were not a fan of all the bees flying around! Clipping the lavender can be tedious for kids as well, so consider if it is something they really want to participate in.

Take photos

Don’t forget to come prepared with a good camera! I enjoyed taking photos and capturing some great shots, from the lavender fields to pollinators enjoying the blooms.
