What is Carnitine?

Carnitine is a nutrient that the human body is able to manufacture from two amino acids:

  • Lysine
  • Methionine

In order for the body to make carnitine in large quantities, it also requires the presence of vitamin C. Carnitine is also manufactured by animals, and so it can be obtained in small quantities from such protein sources as red meat and fish.

Of course, vegans will not be getting carnitine in their diet. As a result, carnitine is considered to be a conditionally essential nutrient. 

Forms of Carnitine

The biologically available form of carnitine is known as l-carnitine. Other forms of carnitine are:

  • D-Carnitine – this is the inactive form of carnitine.
  • Acetyl-l-carnitine – research has shown that this form of  carnitine provides maximum cognitive benefits and may help to offset the symptoms of such conditions as Alzheimers and Parkinson’s Disease.
  • L-carnitine L-tartrate – this form of carnitine has been shown to have the fastest rate of absorption into the inhuman body. It is the best form of workout recovery and is, therefore, commonly added to sports supplements.
  • Propionyl-l-carnitine – this variant of carnitine is best able to help stabilize circulatory irregularities, such as elevated blood pressure. It is also believed to be able to increase the body’s nitric oxide production, which dilates blood vessels.

Energy Production

The main role of carnitine in the body is to participate in the energy production process. It acts as a transporter of fatty acids into the mitochondria of the cell where it is used for energy. It is also believed that l-carnitine actually enhances the efficiency of the mitochondria.

The Acetyl L-Carnitine form of carnitine has the ability to cross the blood bran barrier. This gives it the ability to boost brain health.
