Working from home can be a challenge, especially when you have kids! The challenges faced by remote workers are made all the more difficult when you have little ones running about. Luckily, there are plenty of things you can do to help you balance work and family life and ensure that you can remain focused on your work tasks. Here are some useful tips to help you work from home with kids.

Create a work schedule

The first step is to create a work routine that works for your family. Remote workers without kids may have the flexibility to start work mid-morning and finish later in the evenings. However, this approach is unlikely to work if you have kids to look after. Consider what work schedule will work best for your family and define your working hours. For example, if you need to drop your kids off at school in the mornings, then you may decide to start work once you get home, i.e., at 9 am. However, if you also need to pick them up from school at 3 pm and want to be finished work for the day to spend time with the family and prepare dinner, then you may find it best to start work at 7 am and get a few hours done before the school run. Whatever you decide, make sure that you get into a consistent routine and stick with your work schedule. Remember to also factor lunch and adequate work breaks into your day.

Keep work and family separate

One of the major challenges of working from home is keeping your work and family life separate. Finding a quiet and calm workspace in your home can be even more difficult when you have kids. You should try to find a separate room to use as your office and avoid working in communal areas like the kitchen or living room. Having a distinct office will signal to your family that you are working and reduce the likelihood of you being disturbed. If you don’t have a spare room in your home, then you should consider buying a garden room and converting it into an office. Having your office in an outbuilding will help you create a separation between your work and family life. This, in turn, should increase your productivity and work performance.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Balancing the demands of work and family can be extremely challenging, and this is made all the more difficult when you are working from home. You shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help if you are struggling to manage your work tasks alongside caring for your kids. Ask a family member or trusted friend to take the kids off your hands for a few hours if you are working on a deadline and need some quiet. There is also an excellent variety of childcare options available including childminders, preschool programs, and after-school clubs.
