I received a copy of this album in exchange for my honest review.
We listen to a lot of children’s music, and I knew right away I would enjoy Priscilla Ahn’s new album, La La La. This album has been long in the making and has already received the 2016 NAPPA and Family Choice Awards. And although we were unfamiliar with Ahn’s name, she has created music for years, often for TV shows and films.
This whole album has a light, friendly feel to it. The songs have their own unique sounds, but the overall style is very sweet and gentle. Where many albums are loud and even overpowering, this is a children’s album that is fun and happy, but can be left on to enjoy even on repeat.
The songs have a simple, whimsical vibe, and Ahn describes La La La as “kind of hopeful sounding and innocent and simple in its instrumentation, with songs that I feel kids can relate to, emotionally and sonically. Being genuine in my lyrics and in my connection to my songs—for that to come through—is really important to me.” She also mentions that her album doesn’t “talk down” to kids, and what I realized as I listened to La La La is that the music just isn’t your typical children’s music. Now that my kids are getting older, my 9-almost-10-going-on-teenager year-old daughter will ask me why we are listening to “baby music”. Yet she had no complaints about this album. In part, Ahn’s music is not in your face, and can really be enjoyed as easy listening.
Most of the songs are about everyday happenings, while Desert Lullaby is a wonderfully ethereal song about drifting off to sleep.
The album insert also doubles as coloring pages. What a cute idea!

Vampire, despite the name, is a very lovely bit of music.
