We all know the importance of good oral hygiene, but do you know how important it is to inculcate these habits in our children at an early age? We want the best for our children so that they stay healthy and happy. A huge part of staying healthy is maintaining good oral hygiene. Having a healthy smile will give them the confidence they need to take on the world. You should focus on teaching your kids good habits at an early age. It is better to start at an early age so that they get used to a whole routine. Here are some tips for inculcating good habits in your child for excellent oral hygiene.

Brush with them

Children learn best from their role models through the process of imitation. When they see you taking care of your oral hygiene and encouraging them to do the same, they will pick up more quickly on this habit. You can start a practice of brushing with your kids so that they have an ample amount of time to see what you are doing. Make sure that you floss and brush for at least two minutes so that they see this is the best way to keep their teeth and gums clean.

Reward them

The best motivator for making kids brush their teeth is by setting up a reward system for them. This can enable you to keep a note of their progress and will make sure that they follow the routine till it actually becomes a habit. This will also motivate them to floss regularly. Make sure that you do not reward them constantly otherwise it will lose its charm really soon. You can also use stickers on a calendar for a daily reward system. Do not punish them as they will become averse to brushing and might not form a good habit.

Take them to the dentist regularly

Every individual should visit the dentist at least twice a year. This also includes children. They might be apprehensive and scared about going to the dentist which is why you should try to make them more comfortable by busting the myths of going to a dentist’s office. They should know that their regular checkups will not be painful. Take them to a dental clinic so that you can prevent issues that will cause trouble and pain later on. Once they form a habit of going, they will see that the dentist’s office is not as scary as it seems.

Let them take charge

Giving your children autonomy ensures that they choose to do the right thing instead of aimlessly following instructions. You can give them independence in small things such as picking out their toothbrush. Just a new toothbrush can also motivate them to be more regular with brushing their teeth. This will make the entire process more exciting for children. It will also make them eager to maintain their oral hygiene.

It is essential to teach your children good oral hygiene from a young age. This will ensure that they have solid routines for the rest of their life.
