We love having fun when it comes to holidays, and St. Patrick’s Day is no exception. Besides the usual green clothes, green foods, shamrock decorations, and so on, I like to incorporate some reading into the occasion. Here are some great books your kids can enjoy for St. Patrick’s Day!

There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover – by Lucille Colandro
For years we have enjoyed “The Old Lady Who…” books, and this is no exception. This is a fun story, and the illustrations are great too.
She’s back! That lovely old lady has returned just in time for St. Patrick’s Day. Now she’s swallowing items to make the perfect rainbow to hide a pot of gold.
That’s What Leprechauns Do – by Eve Bunting
We have read lots of children’s books by Eve Bunting, who has written over 200 books!
What do leprechauns do? They bury a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, of course. But as Mrs. Bally Bunion’s ox, Miss Maude Murphy’s hen, and Old Jamie soon find out, they can’t resist having a little fun along the way. For, besides burying pots of gold, mischief is what leprechauns do!
The Night Before St. Patrick’s Day – by Natasha Wing
Natasha Wing writes a lot of “Night Before..” books, and this is a fun book to get the kids excited for St. Patrick’s Day.
It’s the night before St. Patrick’s Day, and Tim and Maureen are wide awake setting traps to catch a leprechaun! When they wake the next morning to the sound of their dad playing the bagpipes and the smell of their mom cooking green eggs, they’re shocked to find that they’ve actually caught a leprechaun. But will they be able to find his pot of gold?
How to Catch a Leprechaun – by Adam Wallace
My kids have talked about catching leprechauns before, and this book is a fun look at trying to set a trap!
You’ve been planning night and day, and finally you’ve created the perfect trap! Now all you need to do is wait. Is this the year you’ll finally catch the leprechaun? Start a St. Patrick’s Day tradition with this fun and lively children’s book.
Patrick: Patron Saint of Ireland by Tomie dePaola
We are big Tomie dePaola fans, and like some of his other books, this story tells of legends behind St. Patrick’s Day.
The story of Patrick’s life, from his noble birth in Britain, to his being captured and taken to Ireland by a group of bandits, to the “dreams” that led him to convert the Irish people to the Christian faith. DePaola also retells several well-known legends, including the story of how Patrick got rid of all the snakes in Ireland.
There are so many St. Patrick’s Day books out there! These are just a few of them, but there are many more! http://amzn.to/2m0w7iO
This sounds cute and funny! I just hope it doesn’t give kids the idea to swallow things in playing.
These books are great, thank you so much for sharing! My kids share my love of reading and would love these. I am excited about There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover what a great version of a classic!
These are so cute! St. Paddy’s day is my FAVORITE holiday! (I was raised Irish Catholic and I’m a former Irish dancer.) Hope to pass my love for the day along to my kiddos!
I love the old lady series.. always so much fun no matter how many times we read them
