Bubble tea, also known as boba tea, is a unique drink that has become widely popular in recent years. This delicious drink combines tea, milk, sweetener, and chewy tapioca pearls, or popping boba.

Making it at home is easy, and allows you to get creative with bubble tea recipes. With homemade bubble teas, you can customize flavors, sweetness, ice, tapioca pearls or popping boba, and toppings.

Here is how to get started when making your own bubble tea.

Ingredients

  • Tea: 2 tea bags (black tea, green tea, or jasmine tea)
  • Water: 1 cup
  • Milk: ½ cup (dairy or non-dairy)
  • Sweetener: to taste (honey, simple syrup, brown sugar, etc)
  • Tapioca pearls (boba): ½ cup
  • Ice cubes: As needed

Instructions

1. Cook the tapioca pearls

Bring water to a boil, and add the tapioca pearls. Cook according to the instructions.

When the pearls are soft and the desired consistency, drain and rinse under cold water.

Toss with honey or brown sugar to add some sweetness, and also to help prevent them sticking together.

2. Brew the tea

Boil 1 cup of water and steep your tea bags for about 5-10 minutes, depending on how strong you want the flavor. Remove the tea bags and let the tea cool.

Alternately, you can use a bubble tea mix, which is a powder you can simply mix with water.

3. Assemble your bubble tea

In a tall glass, add the cooked tapioca pearls. Pour in the brewed tea.

Add milk and sweetener, stirring well to combine. Fill the glass with ice cubes for a chilled drink.

Be sure to use large straws so that you can enjoy the tapioca pearls!
