Hiking Trails in New York

Hiking trails in New York are varied. Here are the 7 best trails we have shortlisted to suit different needs:

1. Watkins Glen State Park – The Gorge Trail and Indian Trail Loop

This is a great hiking trail for beginners. The trail is in the form of a loop; the length is less than three miles long and has incredible scenery – including many waterfalls. The hike ends at a place called Cavern Cascade, which has a spectacular waterfall as well. This is an ideal hiking trail if you have never been hiking before or would like to go with children, your close friends, or a significant other. This can also be a great spot for camping and fishing.

2. Buttermilk Falls Gorge Trail

This trail is not too far away from the trail at Watkins Glen State Park. These trails are also short but are tough to climb. However, at the summit of these trails is a large pool which is open for swimming. A great option for someone more experienced who is looking to mix exercise and leisure.

3. Poet’s Ledge

This trail is just above 6 miles and is a bit more strenuous than the previous two trails. But the best thing about this trail is the tranquility. This is one of the less hiked trails in New York. And being off the beaten path means that you can enjoy your solitude, or be intimate with your loved one while hiking this trail.

4. Overlook Mountain

This strenuous hike also has the chaos of the city. While it is quiet, you will find power lines throughout the hike. Landmarks will also be present – from the ruins of an old hotel to a fire tower (yes you can climb it). The trail ends with a view off the edge of a cliff. If you are a bit more experienced as a hiker, do not miss this one!

5. Saranac Lake 6er

Not for the faint of heart! This is 31 miles and consists of six different peaks. Legend has it that those who can climb all six are entitled to ring the bell in the town square. If you are brave enough, go ahead and give it a try!

As there is a lake, you can always try to kayak for added fun.

6. Cascade and Porter Mountains

Located in Lake Placid, these two mountains are easier to access than others. Almost six miles, it is not a difficult hike and the view at the top is one you will not want to miss.

7. Mount Marcy

Also located in Lake Placid, this is New York’s highest point. The summit is over 5,000 feet and is a great (and intense) avenue for exercise. But when you see the overall view at the top – you will not regret it.

Take a Hike!

Now that you know which are the best hiking trails in New York, it is time to get up and start hiking. If you are new, go for one of the easier ones first before graduating to the tougher ones. And if you are an experienced hiker, grab a few friends and introduce yourself to Mount Marcy!
