Skin treatments involving LED lights have been around since the 1960s with a variety of wavelengths of visible light spectrum penetrating the skin in different depths. It was first thought that LED lights have a different biological impact depending on how deeply they are able to penetrate.

The red and blue lights of the spectrum have been promoted in treating the skin. In fact, experts have discovered that red LED light acts on the skin cells which are known as the fibroblasts. These would have a role in the production of collagen, which builds a huge part in the connective tissue and helps in recovering the skin when harmed.

Similarly, the blue LED light is often used for the treatment of acne. This works by reducing the activity in the sebaceous glands in order to produce less oil, clogging the hair follicles that lead to acne. This light also has the ability to kill acne-causing bacteria known as Cutibacterium acnes.

How does LED light therapy work for skincare

Nowadays, the use of LED light therapy has become more and more popular in terms of skin treatment. This is comparable to the light of the sun, as it influences plants as well as your skin. Thus, plants use a certain pigment substance in converting sunlight into cellular building blocks. This can be compared to the light therapy that stimulates your skin cells in order to make new proteins.

Some people are sceptical in terms of safety that this could become harmful to the skin when used regularly. On the contrary, experts believe that LED lights are safe for the skin when used as directed. In fact, there are no risks of ultraviolet exposure, according to studies, or any other side effects. Potential skin irritation can result if, on the other hand, LED light is not used properly or according to directions.

How to use LED light therapy mask

It is important to consider that when wearing an LED light therapy mask, it may not work for everybody, but you need consistency if you want to try it. For instance, you will fail to see the results if you don’t use light therapy masks at the exact times as indicated in the prescription.

That said, you have to follow the directions for the particular device you are going to use. For example, you have to wash and dry your face, then use the therapy masks before you apply any skincare products. Moreover, it is not advisable to use these masks longer than being directed.

The good thing though is that it doesn’t contain ultraviolet rays, which makes it safe for regular use. At the same time, it doesn’t cause burns in comparison to other anti-ageing treatments. But while it is safe to use for all skin colours and types, it is not advisable to use it when you are taking other acne treatments or when you are experiencing skin rashes. Likewise, the side-effects are rare but may involve increased inflammation, rashes, or redness.
