From the Amazon rainforests wildfire to the melting ice caps to bushfires in Australia, climate disturbances are happening. While it’s crucial for governments and major organisations to take immediate action, it’s also necessary to do our part at an individual level.

Your focus should be on doing as much as you can to reduce your carbon footprint. Switching to a green lifestyle isn’t as complicated as you might think. And contrary to popular belief, it’s not an expensive commitment. In this post, we are sharing some easy-to-implement tips that will help you lead a greener lifestyle.

Buy pre-loved clothing

Fashion is one of the biggest polluting industries. This along with the expansion of fast fashion is taking a toll on the planet. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to give up your love for fashion. Buying pre-loved clothing is an excellent way to keep your fashion consumption in check.

Practice energy conservation

Small changes in your everyday life can amount to significant impact. Practices such as turning off lights and unplugging appliances when not in use, are steps towards a greener lifestyle.  So, before going to bed or leaving for work, make sure you turn off all electronic appliances. A programmable thermostat is also a great way to adjust your house temperature to minimize use of utilities.

Switch to renewable energy

If you’re not already on a renewable energy plan, you should consider switching to one. Today, several energy providers are offering renewable electricity and gas plans. Renewable energy is generated from wind, solar, biomass, hydro and more. It doesn’t deplete fossil fuels and thereby reduce greenhouse gas emissions. You can easily compare electricity prices and switch to a new provider with the help of a reputable energy comparison website.

Reduce meat consumption

Reducing meat consumption is another way to reduce your carbon footprint. While becoming a vegan isn’t feasible for everyone, you can start with eating vegetarian or vegan meals a couple of times in a week.  As far as meat and dairy consumption goes, stick to purchasing sustainably raised products.

Reuse and recycle

From clothes to cardboard boxes to television sets, everything can be recycled. Before throwing out anything, think if it can be reused in some way. For instance, old tyres can make creative planters, while milkshake bottles can be reused as water bottles. You can also donate or sell items instead of sending them to a landfill.

Swap single-use plastic

Only a small fraction of single-use plastic is recycled, while the rest ends up polluting water bodies and landfills. You should stop using disposable straws and cutlery and instead get metal or wooden alternatives. If you’re a regular coffee drinker, take your own reusable mug to the coffee shop. Also remember to bring reusable bags when you shop,

Go paperless

It’s a shame if you’re still using paper when there are electronic alternatives available. To start with, you should opt for a paperless option for your electricity, gas, bank statements and other bills. Electronic copies not only reduce paper use but also allow you to manage and view bills easily.

Invest in eco-friendly appliances

Always purchase energy-efficient appliances and electronics. This is a way to reduce your energy consumption and encourage savings.

In addition to this, switch CFLs and Halogen lights with LED lights. Even though they are pricier, they last longer and use less power.

Use public transport or carpooling

Most metropolitan cities are well-connected with public transportation. Using public transport for your daily commute is better for the environment and will allow you to save in terms of fuel.  If that’s not possible, then consider carpooling with friends or co-workers.

Stay informed

New innovations are constantly emerging to promote green living. Subscribe to green living blogs and publications to stay on top of it. This will also remind you to keep up with green practices.

It’s understandable that all these changes won’t happen overnight. However, the important thing is to start, in any way you can do your bit.
