Give Me All Your Details
You want to frame the question so it doesn’t sound so grabby, but you do need some details. You want to know something about the business and the person who will work in your home.
Start by asking for the pertinent business information including:
- Legal Business Name
- Name of the Business Owner
- Physical Address
- Telephone Number
Some contractors use project managers. Make sure you get their name and understand their preferred method of contact—phone, text, or email.
How Long Has the Contractor Been in Business?
Asking how a contractor has been in business is a natural question for several reasons.
You want assurance they know what they’re doing. Sure, even seasoned professionals make mistakes, but experience usually means fewer errors.
A contractor with a solid work history isn’t likely to disappear with your money before completing your project. Also, established companies have a track record you can check out easily.
Does the Contractor Carry Liability Insurance?
Make sure you ask whether the contractor carries general liability insurance.
It’s critical to ask this question before a contractor begins work at your home. If they don’t carry liability insurance and they or one of their crew members gets hurt on the job, you’re at risk for a lawsuit.
Also, if the contractor damages anything on your property while working, their insurance will cover the repair costs. Don’t hesitate to ask for a copy of their insurance policy.
Is the Contractor Licensed and Bonded?
You’ve asked about liability insurance, but you should also ask if the contractor has a license. Many (but not all) states require contractors to have a license to do business. Whether you’re hiring someone to perform heating services, plumbing work, or carpentry, ask to see their license.
Some states require bonding before they issue a contractor a license. Bonding is a form of insurance designed to protect you if the contractor doesn’t do the job right or doesn’t meet the financial obligations associated with your project.
May I Call Your References?
A good contractor is proud of their work and won’t mind if you talk with their previous clients. Speaking with references can help you determine if the contractor is a good fit for you and your project.
