Superfood

Whether dining in a fine restaurant or just a simple family backyard party, most people go for the classic Southern barbecue menu of leg of lamb, pork butt, baby back ribs, drumsticks or soft shells. While those who are quite health conscious prefer barbecues with fruits.

So here are some tips on which fruit would make the most flavorful barbecue combo with a drumstick or baby back ribs, along with their health benefits:

Peaches

Just take off the pit and brush both sides with olive. Grill it with cut-side down, in medium heat for maybe four to five minutes until tender and grill marks appear. Goes well with chicken barbecue.

Peaches contain vitamins E, K, niacin, folate, iron, choline, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, manganese, zinc and copper. They are low in calories and with no saturated fats, making them good for building connective tissues in the body and developing resistance against infections.

Bananas

Grilled bananas go well with pork barbecue or even with sauced pork dishes. It’s very easy to cook. All you have to do is peel it off, cut into halves and grill. You may brush it with any type of sauce or butter.

Bananas, second to coconut, contain the highest number of vitamins and minerals, and is considered as a superfood. Regardless of kind, bananas contain high potassium and fiber. These are nutrients that help prevent serious illnesses like asthma, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and digestive problems.

Pineapple

With its high fiber content, pineapples can help your stomach digest the beef ribs you just had for dinner. You can either grill pineapples along with meat or separately, on medium heat, whisked with a small amount of brown sugar and, or with cinnamon.

Just a daily intake of a cup of pineapple chunks is associated with a boost to your immune system, strong bones, clear vision, easier digestion and lower risk of macular degeneration. Pineapple is also a good anti-inflammatory.

Mangoes

If you want some balanced flavor in your baby pork back ribs, get some mangoes halves grilled and served together as a combo. Like bananas, mangoes can be good health partners with sauced dishes like pork adobo.

Nutrients, vitamins and minerals? Mangoes have a lot of those. Dietary fiber, carbohydrate and calories, vitamins A, C and B6, and copper, potassium and magnesium. All these can help prevent cancer, anemia, regulate blood pressure, manage diabetes, boost the immune system. Mangos are also associated with healthy brain, a healthy heart, and slowing down the aging process.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are hard root crops when raw so it is usually cooked by boiling to soften, but try grilling them and you’ll find out how tastier and healthier they are. Boiling fills them with water which eventually loosens the fiber strength, but when grilled, the fiber is kept intact in the crop and becomes more health effective.

Sweet potatoes are very good food digesters because of high fiber content, and are also rich in vitamins A, B5, B6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin and carotenoids. These vitamins, nutrients and minerals help regulate blood pressure and protect against cancer.
