This is a sponsored post for the Walmart Holiday toy event and Sverve; all opinions are my own.
Christmas has always been a very special holiday for me. I was raised by my grandmother, and during the holidays, my cousins would visit. They lived far away and visits were a big deal. The anticipation of seeing them was pretty much unbearable, and I remember sitting at the window, just waiting to run outside to greet them!
As kids, we were just so excited about everything Christmas. There were treats, a big dinner, advent calendars, time spent together.. and of course Christmas morning!
On every Christmas Eve, it was so hard for us to fall asleep, and there were many times our parents had to put us back to bed because we would get up way too early (not realizing that it was only 3am!). Once it was late enough (more like 6:30am), we had to wait until everyone was awake and ready, and then we would run out into the living room. Each person was assigned a chair for their presents, and the stockings were hung from the fireplace . We would grab our stockings, rip open our gifts, and make a huge mess. Once we had calmed down a few hours later, we would have a big Christmas breakfast.
Money was tight, and Christmas always had a very special feel to it. What I remember most was the combination of seeing family and the excitement of Christmas morning, seeing all the presents piled up on our chairs.
I still remember how much my grandmother fostered a love of reading. She gave me a lot of special books, and in the front of the book, she would write a special message. I still cherish those books, especially now that she has passed, and I will always have those special notes for me that she wrote inside the cover (signed as “Mom”, since she raised me since I was a baby).
Two of the books that I was so excited to get was The Secret Garden and The Little Princess. I remember being so enchanted and mesmerized by these stories. We would sit and read together, later watching different movie adaptations once we were done with the books. I still have both of these books and look forward to sharing them with my girls.
I also have always loved animals, so stuffed animals were always a hit. I remember getting this white cat, and I even remember taking it to the store as a kid and someone telling me how real it looked! The store clerk said she had to take a double-take because she thought it was a real cat, and I thought that was awesome!
To this day I love books and animals, and my girls seem to have inherited that from me. They would be absolutely delighted to see the same kinds of gifts under the tree this Christmas!
I love making special holiday memories for my kids. From holiday traditions to shopping for the perfect gift, holidays are a really special time for all of us.
You can check out some of the year’s hottest toys at the Walmart Toyland Event throughout November and December. I know I can use any inspiration when it comes to holiday shopping for my kids as well as friends and family, so I am looking forward to seeing what is kid-approved! I will be bringing my girls and seeing their reactions to some of the cool toy taht are out this year (and getting a head start on my Christmas shopping!).
