“No School Today” is Danny Weinkauf’s debut family music album. If you aren’t familiar with his work, he is a Grammy-winning musician and a long time bassist for They Might Be Giants. You probably recognize his song, “I am a Paleontologist”, from They Might Be Giants Here Comes Science album. Danny has spent many years as a professional touring and recording musician, he Danny wrote and recorded all of the music on this album himself.
This album is packed with 16 great songs, and has a variety of artists, including guest artists Laurie Berkner and Hank Green (of the VlogBrothers).
One of the neat things about this album is that some of the vocals are sung Danny’s family members, including his wife (Michelle), daughter (Lena), and son (Kai). I thought it was a nice element of the album that its creation was a family affair. The kids vocals added a fun element to the music, because not only do they both have a great voice, but it adds another level to this CD, and I think it makes it especially appealing for kids.
“No School Today” also uses a variety of instrumentals, which is another nice aspect of the CD. In addition to piano/keyboards, acoustic and electric guitars, drums, stand up and electric basses, you will also hear percussion, vibes, horns, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, and the glockenspiel (all of which are played by Danny!).
Check out the many great tracks on the CD:

The Kidney That Lived in Four People
The wonders of science (based on a true story!)
This album is filled with lots of fun, but also lots of fun things to learn – like what is a bandicoot, and when did man first go to the moon. From the different voices to instruments to different sounds, No School Today will keep you entertained. Both of my kids enjoyed this CD, and it was nice to have something that we could all agree on. Sometimes my older daughter (age 7) complains that music is too young for her, and my younger complains that she doesn’t like the music. Not only do both the kids enjoy this, we (parents) enjoy it too!
