I was very excited to try the Quest line of protein bars, pasta and treats. When the box was delivered, I couldn’t wait to open it up and to think about good times to try different products.
I am a very busy mom to two girls, along with the crazy hectic ‘normal’ of life with my girls. I run a Foundation for my daughter Madeline, who passed away in February of 2012, which takes much of my time and energy. I work out almost every day and try very hard to eat well balanced meals and snacks that help me maintain my girls, my life and long runs. Quest Nutrition was a good option for me.
In checking out the products I was glad to see:
Quest has been able to produce the world’s first truly low-carb protein bar that uses only high-quality proteins and no simple carbs of any kinds, no harmful sugar alcohols, and no glycerin.
Many times my sugar fluctuates and can cause me to be cranky or tired or shaky. I was impressed to not feel that, even after a hard workout. The bars were filling and tasty. One bar in the morning got me to lunch and beyond. I was surprised at how long it took me to feel hungry- and that is a good feeling after doing a boot camp class or running several miles!
I had a chance to try the 12-bar sampler pack. Quest has a huge variety of flavors (well over a dozen) that would suit almost any taste – mixed berry, banana nut muffin, chocolate chip cookie dough, fudge and so many more. Most days, I don’t want something for breakfast in a super-rich fudge flavor, but instead something with fruity twist. It is nice to have different taste options depending on my mood.
Most of the bars have about 20 grams of protein and 200 calories (give or take a few). The fact I want to really share was that those 200 calories kept me very satisfied for about 6 hours.
With every different bar I noticed differences in texture that complimented the flavor. Quest’s new White Chocolate Raspberry bar was scrumptious and had little chips of white chocolate throughout – definitely my favorite!
Banana Nut Bread was smooth was another favorite- the texture was great, the smell was so much like banana bread. I enjoyed all of the bars, noting and enjoying that they were moist and chewable – not dry or thick or hard to swallow. Each bar had a unique and good smell, it was true to flavor. I was happy with the bars and would recommend them to my friends or others seeking a healthy and filling protein bar.
I couldn’t wait to try the Peanut Butter Cups and wondered if they could stand up to a traditional peanut butter cup.
I opened the first bag, had one, and split the other for my daughters. I didn’t love the peanut butter cups in my first tasting. They tasted like chocolate and peanut butter, and the taste was good, but the texture was on the dry side. My girls liked the one they split, they said the taste was great and they were a good ‘sweet treat’.
I wanted to try something else with my other Peanut Butter Cups and decided to make a smoothie. We love smoothies and I love that you can really power pack them with protein, fruit and vitamins. I mixed 2 bananas, 2 tsp of peanut butter, almond milk, Greek yogurt and ice with the 2 peanut butter cups. They broke up wonderfully and complimented the smoothie. It felt like a very indulgent dessert, but was a protein packed power smoothie. My girls loved it too.
I would recommend utilizing the recipes included with the sampler pack, or check out the Quest website and blog for recipes and inspiration. I think you could get very creative and change it up often. I think that type of variety and creativity helps me stay motivated and not bored.
The pasta made me wonder. The alkaline water and look of the pasta is very interesting to say the least. I was curious about how it would taste and what the texture would be like. It is very low calorie and higher protein, but doesn’t have gluten or active carbs.
Quest PASTA is made from Konjac root, also known as Glucomannan. Konjac root has been eaten for hundreds of years in Japan and other Asian countries. Many love Konjac root for its hunger reducing properties. While containing very few calories, the noodles leave you full and satisfied!
I cooked up the pasta, which is very simple and fast. I had some plain and then added my homemade garlic and tomato sauce. The guilt free noodles were my favorite of the noodles. When I opened the bag there was a slight smell, which I read was the alkaline water that they are packaged in. They had no interesting smell once they were cooked and prepped. The texture of the noodles was good, they were more like an al dente noodle. They had a little bite to them. I liked them and think they are a good alternative to traditional pasta with less of the feelings that pasta can give. I liked that I didn’t feel heavy and slow after a nice bowl of this guilt free pasta.
I was overall impressed and happy with the products. I felt the boost of protein throughout my day and know that it helped me from slumping with low sugar or huge feelings of hunger a short time after breakfast. These nutritional products were good supplements to my crazy, busy, active and pretty healthy life.
