Have you heard of the legend of the Selkie?  I had not heard of it before I listened to Mearra – Selkie from the Sea.  This is the fourth album by singer/songwriter Linda Marie Smith, and will be available in February 2014.

So what is a Selkie?  It is a mythical seal, with the ability to shed it’s skin and metamorphose into a human being.  The selkie can live on land but always yearns for the sea.  The Selkie is a Celtic legend, usually heard in Scottish and Irish (as well as other places) folklore.  Much like what I read about Selkie folklore, this intriguing CD tells a story of these mystical creatures.

You will see how the tracks of the CD follows the love story of a Selkie.  There are themes of love, loss, and tragic love:

1. Ian’s Song

A song about a fisherman from Wales, this is where the story begins

2. Mearra

Mearra, the Selkie

3. All This and More

 Beautiful things

4. Water Green – Blue Sky

Beautiful earth and beautiful sea

5. Heaven Knows

A fun, upbeat song about the places we love

6. Seals of Silver and Gold

Seeing the selkies

7. Surrender to the Sea

A dramatic song about returning to the sea

8. I Would Love You

A selkie’s seven years on land

9. One More Kiss

 Time to leave

10. Come With Me

A wish to live together in the sea

11. To Be With You

What it would be like to be together in the ocean

Linda Marie Smith has always been intrigued by fairytales and folklore, and the story of the Selkie inspired her to create this album.  I can absolutely see why this folklore makes such a great basis for this musical journey, as I found myself also intrigued by the story of the selkie!  My kids are always fascinated by fairy tales and after receiving this CD, we looked up more information about the legend of the selkie.

The music on this CD is beautiful, and truly weaves the story of the selkie, the ocean, love, and loss.  Linda Marie Smith has a beautiful voice, and the vocals reflect the emotional journey of Mearra as she falls in love with a fisherman, and then finally returning to the sea 7 years later after many years yearning for her home in the sea.  Each song tells a part of the story, and both the vocals and the instrumentals helped to paint a picture in my mind of the story.  Much of the “scenery” in this CD is made up of the ocean, and the music really captured the feel of the sea.

This CD is recommended for ages 9 to adult, and has a run time of 42 minutes.  We really enjoyed listening to this unique CD, from the music to the legend of the selkie to the story of Mearra.
