Heirloom Wooden Toys is a great place to shop for toys and gifts, especially this holiday season!

Ever since I learned of them last year, I have been hooked and cannot stop adding items from their website onto my universal wish list over on Amazon.  From the learning tower to the wooden teaset to the little yoga mat, I am addicted to Heirloom Wooden Toys right now.

The Root Vue is just one of their many wonderful products, and I had the opportunity to receive and build the kit with my children.  This kit has won several awards, including the Dr. Toy and Oppenheim Gold award!

I was probably just as excited as my 2 and 4 year old were to open and plant the seeds to the RootVue Farm!  What caught my attention as a mother was the teaching opportunity that this activity held.  To show my children the proper way to plant and care for plants and then moving onto the cycle of photosynthesis and then the culmination of growth, with the ultimate ability to watch the roots … well …. take root!

This kit is extremely easy to set up, and comes with a booklet to walk you through the steps, and I love that it comes with everything you need (other than water, of course!).  The Root Vue is for ages 4 and up, so I was excited to use this with my 4-year old who I currently homeschool.  I love hands-on science kits such as this one, because these visuals stick with children.

The RootVue Farm is quite simple, but definitely takes an adult to supervise!

First, we were given pre-packaged soil pods that we placed in an oversized bucket.

Then we added water and let them sit to absorb the moisture, so that it would be easier to break apart.

Once the soil was completely dissolved within the water, I transferred the wet soil into the packaged casing for the RootVue farm.  I will say that the recommended amount of water to soil ratio was WAY too much.  Although I drained off as much water as I could, I still had to sop up a lot with a towel.

Next comes the seed packets:  Carrots, Onions and Radishes

We were instructed to plant the seeds quite close to the viewing glass so that the roots could be seen.

Although I don’t think I quite planted them close enough, within 2-3 days, we had sprouted radishes and within a week, we were able to see the carrot tops!

Once your Root Vue is set up, you can watch the plants grow through a special viewing window.  I can’t tell you how excited my kids were to check on this set every day, and watch plants grow upwards while watching the roots grow downward!  There are so many great lessons you can teach with this set, and I love that we can do this indoors any time of year.  For those of us who can’t grow things outdoors year round, this is a fun experiment to do indoors, and then take what we learned about plants and apply it to our garden during the summer months.
