Mama Doni’s “Jewish Holiday Party” DVD (**HOLIDAY GIVEAWAY**)

Mama Doni’s Jewish Holiday Party” is a DVD/CD set, spotlighting three Jewish holidays: Chanukah, Passover and Shabbat (the weekly sabbath, rather than a once-a-year celebration like the other two).  Each segment contains fun facts about the holiday, a cooking lesson – and, above all, lots of songs from the Mama Doni Band, all done in an acoustic bluegrass style!

Mama Doni's "Jewish Holiday Party"
The DVD provides a nice, simple overview of the three holidays that would be appropriate for young Jewish children (or even curious non-Jewish children) to learn about traditions and celebrations.

The cooking segments were particularly enjoyable, teaching the viewer to make Jewish delicacies like latkes, challah, and even matzo-pizza.  These cooking tutorials are clearly aimed at kids, making these projects fun and easy.

Several of the songs are catchy and have fun visuals to go along with them.  The Chanukah gelt-themed “Honey This Ain’t Money” is a standout on both of those counts – and the stripped down acoustic sound, heavy on banjo, is a nice alternative to over-produced kids’ tunes.  Each song is done in a very similar style, in Mama Doni’s unique musical genre of bluegrass, rock, and more.

Mama Doni

There are 12 Mama Doni songs on the CD.  There is accompaniment by guitarist Eric Lindberg with a variety of instrumentals – in addition to guitar, you will hear 5-string banjo, mandolin, ukele, and the dobro).  The CD consists of both songs from the DVD, plus some traditional Jewish songs.

Mama Doni’s Jewish Holiday Party would make a good gift for kids who are a bit too old for Shalom Sesame or Oy Baby, but are still looking for a simple, musical exploration of Jewish holidays.  For everyone else (parents included), you’ll be looking forward to breaking it out for occasions such as Chanukah.  Children are sure to enjoy Mama Doni’s enthusiasm for Jewish traditions!
