Have you heard of Giant Microbes?  If you ever pondered what certain germs, viruses, cells, or other viruses looked like, Giant Microbes brings them to you in plush form!  We had so much fun browsing the Giant Microbes website, which offers dozens and dozens of microbes “brought to life” – figuratively, of course!

Founded in 2002, our mission here at Giantmicrobes Inc. is to produce unique and interesting gifts for children and adults alike.  Whether your interest is educational, medical, or just plain old entertainment, we’re your number one source for all things microbial!

Giant Microbes

Choosing our Giant Microbe was a challenge!  We checked out their catalog, and there are so many to choose from!  My daughter had meningitis last year, so that was a top contender:

Giant Microbes MeningitisHowever, we let her choose, and she decided on malaria!

Giant Microbes Malaria

Each microbe comes with tag, which tells you which microbe it is.  This is great for when your kids forget, or you have a bunch of these and you can’t keep track of which is which.  It also comes with a glossy paper tag, which gives you more information about your microbe as well as a photograph of it magnified by a microscope.

In the short amount of time that we have had our Malaria microbe, my kids have asked me quite a few questions, as this little “critter” has actually been quite thought-provoking.

~ How big are germs?

~ How do you catch Malaria?

~ How come we don’t get Malaria?  And then, where do people get Malaria?

So although this is a fun toy, and a novelty, it does also offer plenty of educational value.  In addition to answering lots of questions, we have talked about things like microscopes, vaccines, and more.

Giant Microbes Malaria

Giant Microbes are fun for both kids and adults.  My friend is a junior high school science teacher, and she has a bunch of these of her classroom.  She is a big fan, and her students love them!  These would make great gift ideas!  Know a marine biologist?  Perhaps they would like a copepod, krill, or red tide.  A librarian?  How about a book worm?  A dentist – a cavity!  There are so many microbes to choose from, as well as other products – such as

And if all this talk of microbes has you feeling a little squirmy – and perhaps taking full advantage of using this as a learning opportunity – you might want their “Common Cold” hand soap dispenser!  How fun would this be in a classroom or nurse’s office?
