A troubled marriage, a birthday party and a toy store in trouble are all parts of the story in a new movie called  “Charlie: A Toy Story”.  This is a Dove-approved family friendly movie about boy and his dog as they work to save his Dad’s toy shop.  You’ll see adventures reminiscent of “Home Alone” as Caden works to fend off bullies, keep his Dad’s dream alive and work against the odds.   “Believe in yourself, never give up and you will make your own magic.”

In this story, you get a little insight into the bullies.  They are two kids who want and need the attention of their parents.  They need better supervision, fewer electronics and more parental guidance and attention.  I appreciated that part, but despite seeing that part, I still found that they were very naughty!

Caden shows an unquenchable love for his father, despite his mother’s lackluster approval.  Caden and his golden retriever, Charlie, go all out to help his Dad and the toy store.  The love of a child for his father is touching.  The things Caden does to defend himself from the bullies are similar to “Home Alone”, with gooey food, messy spills and such.  There is no violence and no one gets hurt.

Overall it is a fun, clean, family-friendly movie, but I was frustrated by the portrayal of a weak father and a “strong” woman as the parents of Caden.  Why does it always have to be the man who is weak or wrong or needs to grow up?  Don’t women ever make mistakes or need to gain some maturity?  (In the real world, both people almost always need work in some area, not just the men.)  In the end, they all live happily ever after, but it sure is a long hard road to get there.

You can read an in-depth review of this movie from Christian Cinema.

Overall, a fun movie that will have you laughing and shaking your head.  Your kids, especially the boys, will love it.  It is certainly worth having in your home library.
