“Stone Soup” from Scholastic Storybook Treasures (+**GIVEAWAY**)

Stone Soup and other stories from the Asian tradition

Whether you are looking for a new twist on old favorites, a neat way to celebrate Chinese New Year, stories from the Orient or just some great books, Scholastic Storybook Treasures has brought these stories to life with style.  Each story is wonderfully narrated and the illustration details have been highlighted using animation, camera movement or focus on specific elements.  This collection includes the following four terrific stories:

Stone Soup, written and illustrated by Jon. J. Muth

The classic tale retold with a twist from the Orient

The Five Chinese Brothers, written by Claire Bishop, illustrated by Kurt Weise

The extraordinary talents of five brothers come in handy when one of them gets into trouble.

Lon Po Po, written and illustrated by Ed Young

Think you know the story of Little Red Riding Hood?  See it here again with an Asian flair.

The Stonecutter, written and illustrated by Gerald McDermott

A lowly stonecutter longs for power and once he gets it, learns that he had the greatest power in the beginning.

Also included on the video is an interview with Jon J. Muth, author and illustrator of Stone Soup.  I love hearing details about how authors live, work and get their ideas and then translate their ideas into the books we read.  It makes their stories more appealing.

My kids loved hearing the stories, some of them familiar, but with a new twist.  The narration is fabulous and is so nice to have available, especially when character and places have unfamiliar or unusual names!  I also love, as I have with all the other stories from Scholastic Storybook Treasures, the READ-ALONG feature.  I love having the words on the screen for the kids to see while they are being read.  It is just one more exposure that may make the difference in when and how well my children read!

“Stone Soup” is just one of a huge collection of resources available from Scholastic Storybook Treasures.  They are also making available March On!, a collection of stories to celebrate African American heritage.  Check it out!
