I just plugged Snapshot by Progressive Insurance into our car’s diagnostic port. For the next 30 days, we’ll drive as usual, and Snapshot will track miles/time driven, rapid accelerations (If you accelerate faster than about 7 mph/second, it counts as a rapid acceleration. This doesn’t impact your potential savings, but it does affect your accident risk) and hard braking. I didn’t have to switch my insurance to try it, but I will find out how much I could save by switching once my trial is up. If I decide not to switch, I send Snapshot back. If my projected savings (up to 30%) makes me decide to switch, I’ll have have six months to buy a Progressive auto policy at my personalized rate.
It only took a minute to plug it in, and I don’t have to do anything but drive normally for the next month (though I can log in online at any time to see how I’m doing). Progressive is sending me a gas card to help me get around, and you can check back in a month to see how I’m doing, and have a chance to win some goodies yourself!
