Putumayo’s Cowboy Playground **GIVEAWAY**

Whether you love old Western music, are doing a unit study on cowboys or just want to listen to some great music, Cowboy Playground from Putumayo Kids would make a great addition to your music library.  For me, this album is a lot of nostalgia and with a dash of humor thrown in.

Check out these song titles and performers:

Saddle Bum by Wylie & the Wild West

I’m an Old Cowhand by Riders in the Sky

Close ‘Em on Up by Kerry Grombacher

Back in the Saddle Again by Liz Masterson & Sean Blackburn

It’s the Cowboy Life for Me by David John & the Comstock Cowboys

Pecos Bill by Buck Howdy

Don’t Fence Me In by Johnny Bregar

Home on the Range by Victor Johnson

Whoopee Ti Yi Yo by Ian Tyson

May the Trail Rise Up to Greet You by Dave Stamey

Take Me Back to the Range by Peter Rowan & Don Edwards

Happy Trails by Cowboy Envy

This album also includes a 24-page booklet featuring archival photos from the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming. Holly George Warren, renowned music critic and author of The Cowgirl Way, contributes charming liner notes that introduce the whole family to the rollicking world of cowboy music. As always, the colorful cover was illustrated by Nicola Heindl.

My personal favorite song on this album is “I’m an Old Cowhand” from Riders in the Sky.  That dash of humor I mentioned?  It is brimming over in this song.  Here is a peek at the lyrics that have me giggling…

I’m an old cowhand from the Rio Grande
But my legs ain’t bowed and my cheeks ain’t tanned
I’m the cowboy who never saw a cow
Never roped a steer ’cause I don’t know how
I sure ain’t fixin’ to start in now
Yippee i oh ti-ay! Yippee i oh ti-ay!

Like what you see?  Thanks to Putumayo Kids, you can listen to snippets of this and all the other songs on the album.

“Pecos Bill” by Buck Howdy is literally a sung tall tale.  It will make you laugh and wonder how much of the tale might be true!  “Don’t Fence Me In” performed by Johnny Bregar has been redone to have a little more swing than I have heard before.  It will have your hips moving as you dance along.  “Home on the Range” performed by Victor Johnson has been redone and performed at a fast-paced tempo.  If you were trying to ride your horse at this tempo, you would be trotting along!  No sashaying or moseying in this song!

Did I mention that this can be classified as a nostalgia album for me?  I grew up singing many of these songs, playing them in music class in school and hearing them on the radio.  The songs on this album are performed with lots of toe-tapping accompaniments, plenty of cowboy lingo, some fancy guitar playing and lots of Texas twang.  (That’s coming from a Northern Wyoming Yankee who speaks “plain” English with no accent!)
