Scholastic’s The Valentine’s Collection **GIVEAWAY**

Want a few classic stories of friendship that are perfect for Valentine’s Day or any time you want to talk about friends?  Scholastic has put together a heart-warming, nostalgic collection of stories in their Storybook Treasures series called The Valentine’s Collection.  This collection includes five different stories of friendship, one of which related specifically to Valentine’s Day.  None of them are sappy or romantic, just sweet, down-to-earth tales of everyday friendships.

One Zillion Valentines

My kids and I loved this story of two friends discussing valentines.  Their discussion leads to action and eventually more action and more action, resulting in warming the hearts of many around them.  A sweet, thoughtful story with gentle animation, this story points out the valentines are for everyone, and they do not have to be expensive.  Quite a concept for today’s modern family!

A Letter to Amy

Peter wants to invite a girl to his party, but the wind makes it exceedingly difficult to make it happen.  In the end, all is well and Peter is pleased.  I love this story of going against the teasing of your friends and inviting a true friend to join you, regardless of their gender.  This story is written and illustrated by Ezra Jack Keats.  What a treat!

Goggles!

In another timeless tale from Ezra Jack Keats, Peter and his friend, Archie, use their faithful friend (a dog), Willie, to outsmart a group of bullies.  This story had my kids giggling at the antics of both the kids and the dog.  The gentle animations do an amazing job of keeping pace with these mischievous boys!

Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge

A small boy loves his neighbors at the retirement home next door.  But, when he hears that one of his friends has lost her memory, he goes to great efforts to help her find them again.  A tender tale that will make your heart and your face smile, I loved the encouragement towards intergenerational interaction.  This is just plain good stuff.

Will I Have a Friend?

Every child wonders if they will be able to find a friend when they go someplace new.  This is one child’s story as he heads to the first day of school.  It is delightfully fun and reassuring for those who might be headed to a new, slightly scary adventure.

BUY IT!  This DVD is available from Scholastic for $14.95.  It would make a terrific addition to your home video library.

One of my favorite things about Scholastic’s DVDs is the Read Along Function.  While it can be turned off, our family always leaves it on to help promote awareness of the words being read by the narrator.  With non-readers and early readers in our house, the Read Along Function is a must for us!

Scholastic always does a terrific job of bringing favorites stories to the screen.  These particular stories, based on classic children’s books, have collectively sold more than 250,000 copies and won the Caldecott Medal Award and the Library of Congress Book of the Year Award.  The music, sound effects and animations along with terrific narration make for a terrific combination that kids love.  I always look forward to their new releases.  And, I am excited to see that they are continuing to make great stories for us to view together as a family.  Look at what is coming!
