Some kids respond really well to classroom instruction. Others do not. It sometimes takes a little extra something, usually an extra dose of tactile interaction, gross motor work, visual stimulation or verbal prompting, for things to “click”. I have one of those children. My 5-year-old has really been struggling with letter sounds. He can name all the letters, but does not seem to be able to remember the sounds each letter makes. RockNLearn’s Letter Sounds DVD was just the thing we needed. It uses upbeat, engaging music and characters with learning couched as “games”.
- The New Alphabet Song
- Learn the Sounds
- Letter Sounds Quiz
- Name That Letter!
- Reading Words
- Consonant Combinations
- Spell It!
- Swap the Sounds
- Common Sight Words
- Reading Sentences
Our favorite was the part where the mouth appeared on screen and showed how each letter sounded and “looked” when it was spoken. This was a nice touch, especially since I have a child who still says the “W” sound instead of “R” and “L”. The pacing on some of the games was just right, while on others it seemed too fast, according to my kids. I would imagine that repeated viewing and familiarity would solve that issue. I also noticed that the letter sounds were limited to one sound per letter, despite the cases in which one letter might make 2 or 3 sounds. That was a big missing element, in my opinion.
If you want more information about the Letter Sounds DVD, the website offers you the option of watching a clip, reading more about it and perusing the reviews and comments made by other viewers. Letter Sounds is also available as a CD with book.
The Letter Sounds DVD has won three awards, including the National Parenting Publications Honor, Parent’s Guide to Children’s Media and Dr. Toy 10 Best Video Products. It sounds like I am not the only one who likes it.
