The Joy of Christmas Giveaway: Food Dehydrator from Hayneedle

In continuing our  Joy of Christmas Giveaway Event, is…

Hayneedle sells an incredible number of products (over 200,000 of them with free shipping) including small appliances. If you know me, you know that I love gadgets, and small appliances are no exception! We’ve been eyeing food dehydrators for the longest time, and I was thrilled to receive the TSM Products 10 Tray Harvest Food Dehydrator from Hayneedle for review.

We were excited to make dried fruits and snacks for hiking and biking, as well as snacks for our guinea pig! Not only would it be far more affordable than buying said snacks, but we would know exactly what went into it. As soon as my husband heard we were getting a dehydrator, he said “beef jerky, here I come!”

The dehydrator has 10 trays (over 10 square feet of drying space!), 600 watts of power with front to back dehydration, and an adjustable thermostat to dry anything from fruit to flowers!

When we received the dehydrator, the shipping box looked like it had been cut & re-taped, the inside box wasn’t taped at all, and the temperature control knob wasn’t attached. It appeared as though the “stem” wasn’t long enough to attach it properly.

(That’s my husband’s hand, I don’t have man hands I swear!)

The dehydrator works just fine, but we did let Hayneedle know anyway. They contacted me right away and were ready to send a new food dehydrator and have the old one picked up. They take pride in their customer service team and want anyone who receives one of their products to be completely satisfied. Whether the product was paid for or given away and whether or not the customer is a blogger. Pretty impressive! They are also contacting their buying department to let them know of the packing issue.

Fair warning to any vegetarians that our first project was beef jerky!! The premium brand of beef jerky we like retails for around $1.43 per ounce. (You can get it a little cheaper on sale.) Not only is it expensive, but it contains MSG, hydrolyzed corn protein and sodium nitrite.

We bought top round, trimmed it of the fat, then marinated it overnight. We took a picture of the meat marinating in the bowl, but it looked so disgusting even to me (and I’m not squeamish), that I just can’t post it, LOL. My husband also dehydrated some peppers that he grew this summer, so I can have them at the ready for recipes!

After 7 hours, we had about 26 ounces of tasty beef jerky (the peppers took a little bit longer.) If we had paid for that much of the brand we like (this was actually tastier), it would have cost over $37.00. Not bad for under $17 for meat and a few hours of waiting! Not to mention that we know exactly what’s in it. It was easy to use, didn’t monopolize my oven, and won’t heat up your house in summer!

Cleanup was easy since the racks are dishwasher safe, and they came clean with no trouble at all.

I can’t wait to make other goodies like dried apples, peaches, mangoes and bananas, fruit leather and dried tomatoes! The only downside so far is that it’s really quite large (13.5 x 13 x 18 inches) so it’s probably not something you’d want to leave out on your counter all the time, unless you have a very large kitchen.

BUY IT!  The TSM Products 10 Tray Harvest Food Dehydrator retails for $129.99 (19% off the list price!) and ships within 24 hours with free shipping!
