Are you tired of the same old Christmas music? Do you want to add a little spring to your step or new sounds to your home? Putumayo has just released their Celtic Christmas CD. It is filled to the brim with old favorites with a new flavor. My kids commented immediately the music as being similar to that played at our local Renaissance festival. Both children and adults alike will enjoy this treasure trove of Christmas sounds.
The songs on this album are made by groups from Ireland, Scotland, England, Canada and the United States. The tunes will be familiar, but the performances are fresh and new. Check out these titles and artists:
- The Albion Christmas Band – Here We Come A Wassailing
- Charles T. Cozens – O Come, O Come Emmanuel
- The Gothard Sisters – Little Drummer Girl
- DruidStone – Noel Nouvelet
- David Huntsinger – Angels We Have Heard on High
- Charles T. Cozens – Good King Wenceslas
- Lasairirfhíona Ní Chonaola – Nollaig Bhan (White Christmas)
- Steve Schuch & Night Heron Consort – Joy to the World
- Áine Minogue – Manx Jezebel Carol
- David Arkenstone – God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
- Dougie MacLean – Auld Lang Syne
Many of the songs on this album are instrumental and full of the rich sounds of the mandolin, strings, harp, and flute. Others add wonderful vocals in English or Gaelic. Each song is a unique blend of the familiar with a twist. They will have you humming along, tapping your toes and wishing for a dance partner so you could dance joyfully around the room. My favorite was David Arkenstone’s rendition of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. I played it repeatedly for reasons I can not seem to put into words. Little Drummer Girl was familiar, but had many fun new textures to it, making it new and fresh. I truly enjoyed the entire album and will have it playing in my house from now until the New Year (and maybe longer if I can get away with it!).
