Scholastic’s Chrysanthemum and More Whimsical Stories (**GIVEAWAY**)

Scholastic Storybook Treasures presents a new collection of stories together for the first time in a 3-DVD collection. Chrysanthemum…and more mouse mayhem has been put together to support self-esteem, reading skills and discussions of growth and change.

This terrific group includes stories that have won dozens of awards including the Caldecott Medal, Carnegie, NAPPA Gold, ALA Notable, and more.  Many of the stories are familiar, while others may be new to you.  The collection includes:

Chrysanthemum…and more mouse mayhem

  • Owen
  • A Weekend with Wendell
  • The Caterpillar and the Polliwog
  • Hondo and Fabian
  • Mouse Around

Rapunzel…and more classic fairytales

  • The Elves and the Shoemaker
  • The Talking Eggs
  • The Three Billy Goats Gruff
  • Lon Po Po
  • Princess Furball

Is Your Mama A Llama?…and more classic children’s stories

  • Each Peach Pear Plum
  • Noisy Nora
  • The Little Red Hen
  • Reading to Your Bunny

  • A Visit With Rosemary Wells

Spanish Version of:

  • Is Your Mama A Llama?
  • Noisy Nora
  • Owen
  • The Caterpillar and the Polliwog

Scholastic makes the stories come alive with terrific narration from people like Meryl Streep, Sarah Jessica Parker, Danny Glover, and others! Then they add appropriate background music, sound effects and very nice animation/camera work to highlight the illustrations in the books and bring them to life.

I especially appreciate the read-along feature on the disks.  It puts the words the narrator is speaking on the screen and highlights them as they are spoken.  This feature helps viewers take steps towards reading.  I highly recommend you use it each time you watch a story.

My children were introduced to the story of the Lon Po Po for the first time.  It is the story of Little Red Riding Hood (or the Big Bad Wolf) told as it is in a different culture.  We used it to compare and contrast with the story familiar to them and discuss which parts of each story they liked and did not like.  It opened the door to reading other stories that are similar (but not the same).  Plus, they had heard Three Billy Goats Gruff before, but differently.  Hearing someone else tell the SAME story in a different way was fun, too, as were the discussions that ensued.  Is Your Mama a Llama? is a story familiar to us and fun to hear read by a different narrator.  No two people read a story the same way.  I enjoy letting my kids hear someone else read a familiar story.

Chrysanthemum…And More Whimsical Stories is available for $24.95 as a collection or each DVD can be purchased separately.  Scholastic’s Storybook Treasures DVD  stories make great gifts for children’s birthdays, graduation, encouragement, just because or for the upcoming holidays.

You can print a coloring page from Chrysanthemum here.  Plus, check out their other printables.

Speaking of holidays, if you like these stories, check out the upcoming release of Giving Thanks.  It includes narrations by Chief Jake Swamp and Danny Glover.  How exciting!

Don’t forget to check out announcements about Scholastic’s upcoming releases on facebook.  Happy reading!
