Did you know that commercial (jarred) baby food is almost tasteless and virtually devoid of key nutritional content? If you could have delicious, wholesome homemade baby food in less than 10 minutes, would you do it? How about baby cereals? In a easy step, you could make your own from scratch and eliminate the purchase of boxed baby cereals altogether.
With over 200 simple, fast and innovative recipes for infants and toddlers (aged 6 months to 2 years), The Best Homemade Baby Food on the Planet is sure to be a hit among parents and caregivers. The comprehensive baby/toddler cookbook, authored by the famous Registered Dietitian Tina Ruggiero and the food-passionate and successful Registered Nurse Karin Knight, has been a hot little item since it hit the market in November.
This book was written for every parent who wants to give their child the gift of healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime.
And it couldn’t ring truer!
This is by far my favorite baby cookbook. Not only are the recipes palate pleasers, but they are aesthetically pleasing and winning combinations as well. I am not sure which are more appetizing – the recipes, the names of the recipes, or the beautiful photography that adorns the pages of the book!
Like a good baby cookbook, it lays out the basics of how and when to introduce solids. However, it goes beyond the basics, dividing recipes into ages, providing nutritional analysis for each recipe, and giving helpful hints and time-saving tips along each step of the process. There is even a reference chapter on nutrition with a vitamin chart and a section talking about dairy substitutes. In the back of the book lies an ingenious feedback chart where you can rate each recipe and add personal notes. Where applicable, the book also provides various ways to cook each recipe and offers substitutes and variations. And to top it off, a cute little snowflake denotes that a recipe is suitable for freezing. This attention to small details is what hooked me.
Although I did not puree my daughter’s foods (I opted for Baby-Led Weaning methods instead), I could certainly have adjusted the infant purees in the book to a more creative adaptation of what we were feeding our daughter at the time. And I can most definitely use the toddler recipes on her (12 months) and her brother (age 3) now. I’m pretty sure that this book will have my picky 3 year old liking (okay, at least trying) vegetables in no time.
Seriously, the combination of ingredients are fabulous, and not just for babies. By incorporating some of these foods (making “adult” variations of these recipes), it encourages the whole family to branch out from the routine and try something new and nutritious. If nothing else, this cookbook will help me personally be more creative in my own recipes.
BUY IT! I highly suggest purchasing a copy of this book for yourself or as a gift to an expectant mother or desperate parent of a picky toddler. It retails for $19.99 but you can purchase it from Amazon for $13.59.
