Scholastic DVD *GIVEAWAY CLOSED* True Story of the 3 Little Pigs

Everyone thinks they know the story of the 3 Little Pigs-but has anyone ever thought to ask the wolf his side of the story? The latest DVD release from Scholastic Storybook Treasures answers that question in one of my favorite stories EVER.

The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, narrated by Paul Giamatti, explains the REAL reason that the wolf was huffing and puffing and why he was talking to the pigs in the first place!

We had to run this one back twice while we were watching it, because all of us, including my darling husband, were laughing too hard to hear the narration. We totally saw that one coming.

There are three other stories on the DVD that make this an even better addition to our library of Scholastic titles.

Wallace’s Lists is the most adorable story of a mouse who makes lists for everything and doesn’t think that there’s a place for an adventure, without a list.  We loved the little list making mouse and his unexpected adventure. It was absolutely wonderful as a lesson about going with the flow for all 3 of us in our house and how an adventure is not always what you think it may be.

The Pigs’ Wedding is an oddball tale of two pigs who get married. Paint, a mud puddle and a lot of rain factor into this story. I’d never heard this one before and it was all new to me. Isaac thought it was quite fun, and loved when the rains came..and well, I won’t give it away.

Henry Builds a Cabin is my all time favorite, besides the title story. This is the tale of a Bear named Henry (based on Henry David Thoreau) and how he built a house bigger than he’d ever imagined it. I loved the whole vibe of the story that nature could be your livingroom, stair case, swimming pool and garden. It reminded me of my days working at Girl Scout camp and tying up the sides of my platform tent so we could get a good breeze and sleep under the stars.  It was a nice, nice reminder to make sure to get out in the world and experience nature. What I also loved about this was the educational part of it all about Thoreau, and what his cabin in the woods really looked like, and why he built it like that. It lead to a lot of nice discussions.

We all know The House that Jack Built from when we were kids and can’t think of any new twists to it, but this one brings new twists and a surprise guest at Jack’s house! It’s really quite fun. This one happened to be our least favorite-because Isaac, being Isaac, got bored quickly with the repetition.  He ended up reciting it before the narrator did. Even with that being the case, it was still a fun part of the DVD.

We love this set – Scholastic has hit it out of the park again!

i prefer having everyone live – the wolf is only behaving like a wolf, trying to eat, and the piggies are just cute – it is better for younger kids if they all survive

I have nerver heard it any other way than they three little pigs are all in the brick house and the woulf tries to go down the chimney and lands into a pot of boiling water from the fire place and runs hollering away and everyone lives happily ever after. I would love to hear the TRUE story. How fun.

  13. 13

I don’t really know any other versions. In the one I’ve heard, the wolf huffs and puffs and blows himself away…. It’s sort of vague…. does that mean the wolf died? I don’t know.

  14. 14

Oh- I didn’t know there was a real ending. I thought the wolf couldn’t get in so he just kind of left…end of his story.

The version I was taught has the wolf landing in the pot. The pigs all survived but the wolf doesn’t make it.
