I’ve come to the conclusion that we have too many toys. Scratch that. We have too many questionably safe, plastic and battery-operated toys. What ever happened to timeless and imaginative wooden toys you could pass down from generation to generation? Sadly, our society has become more and more disposable, and that’s also reflected in today’s toys.
On my to-do list is to get rid of more than half of the toys plaguing our house and replace them with safe, long-lasting wooden alternatives. It’s coming along slowly, but the good news is that we are certainly headed in the right direction. And thanks to the help of The Soft Landing, I see a light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. Recently they sent us a wonderful set of wooden vegetables from HABA to review (and a perfect compliment to our new wooden play kitchen).
These veggies are by far the most attractive set and the quality is superior to that of other wooden play food I have seen. What initially attracted me was the fact that they weren’t the typical vegetables. I mean how many times have you seen mushrooms and turnips as play food?
The colors are vivid, the finish is smooth, the details are precise and the size is perfect for little hands. My son even likes the little accompanying mesh bag that he can carry to the grocery store – he says it looks like my reusable grocery bags! Both of my children cannot seem to keep their little hands off of these irresistible veggies.
HABA is a Germany-based company that has received prestigious awards and commendation from Parents’ Choice, National Parenting Center, Creative Child, Parents’ Guide, and the TODAY Show and has been featured in array of magazines. Made of hard wood and finished with non-toxic, child-friendly paints and lacquers, these toys are definitely the type of toys I am hoping to replace our current ones. (FYI, Germany’s safety standards are some of the more rigorous of standards worldwide, even surpassing those of the US.)
The set includes a cotton mesh shopping bag, 2 carrots, 2 mushrooms, 1 turnip, 1 red pepper, 1 green pepper, 2 tomatoes. The recommended age for the HABA wooden vegetables is 3 years and up, but I think it’s mostly due to the fact that the tomatoes and peppers have a small part (resembling the stem) that could possibly break off. However, I have had no issues with it thus far.
When we think of children’s toys most of us initially think that the toys must be safe and nontoxic, especially those of a baby. But that’s far from the reality. As The Soft Landing states, “Beyond the lead paint restriction, there are no mandatory rules to regulate what can or cannot be used in children’s products in the U.S., and no disclosure requirements on toxic chemicals in toys.” How discouraging and frustrating!
But with over 65 brands of 100% safe, nontoxic products that are free of BPA, PVC and Phthalate, The Soft Landing “takes the headache out of making the switch to safer gear.”
As a family-owned business, these sisters and their mom arduously work to find the best alternatives for our children, and their product research has been acknowledged by ABC News, Newsweek, and the New York Times. The Soft Landing Blog, written by owner and founder Alicia Voorhies, is a fabulous resource for current toxic research on “How to Avoid Endocrine Disruptors,” product reviews and quick reference shopping guides. I particularly like her must-read article on the toxic dangers of Christmas lights.
The team at The Soft Landing are passionate about and dedicated in their commitment, often going above and beyond the call of duty. In fact, they even offer an extensive list of consulting services to daycares, schools, medical facilities and families (at home even!) on reducing chemical exposure.
Some of my favorite brands offered by The Soft Landing include CaliBowl, Earth Mama Angel Baby, Glass Dharma , Green Sprouts, Haba, iPlay, Kidishes, Kids Konserve and Ringley, but also be sure to take a look at their clearance items, stocking stuffers and Christmas specials. And for the indecisive shoppers, The Soft Landing also carries gift cards.
