“When you listen to really good music, it’s hard to sit still.”
My husband played the drums for a good majority of his life, and I, though not a musician, was a dancer who loved a good beat from around the world. When we found out that our son inherited not only our love of music but also our eclectic style, we were ecstatic. But how do we introduce our three year old to the different genres of music without running into some lyric issues from CDs or the radio?
Putumayo Kids makes it so that we don’t just have to resort to traditional kids songs. Over and over again. Little ears can listen to appropriate music for them while their parents can still listen to something resembling their own music – without getting bored or sacrificing. Variety PLUS the opportunity to introduce kids to a little culture through music. I LOVE that!
Each of the CD compilations features a little booklet that showcases the artists, gives a short summary or story behind each song, and (as in the Jazz Playground’s case), a glossary of (jazz) terminology.
Some of the songs on the CDs are traditional favorites, but with a twist – a little bit of jazz or a lotta soul, for example. And if you listen to the music without paying attention to the words, you would have no idea that these were kids songs. (Go ahead and pretend it’s adult music!) Like one of our authors Kimberlee said in her review, “There is something for everyone!” I dare you to sit still!
In our home, we love listening to Hawaiian music, and since I am Brazilian by birth, we can’t wait to get our hands on Brazilian Playground and Hawaiian Playground. But Putumayo has more than just kids CDs. They also have adult music. The same great beats but more adult-ish lyrics. Next on my list is Acoustic Brazil (even my son would enjoy this one).
Putumayo guarantees that you will like their CDs with their Feel Good Guarantee. If by any rare chance you are not completely satisfied with your purchase, return it for a FULL refund.
Putumayo World Music was established to introduce people to the music of the world’s cultures. The label grew out of Putumayo clothing company, founded by Dan Storper in 1975 and sold in 1997. Co-founder Michael Kraus joined Storper to help launch Putumayo World Music in 1993. In the past 17 years, the label has become known primarily for its upbeat and melodic compilations of great international music characterized by the company’s motto: “guaranteed to make you feel good!”
The Putumayo Kids division was created to introduce children to other cultures through fun, upbeat world music. Since the release of the best-selling World Playground CD in 1999, Putumayo Kids has established itself as one of the leading children’s record labels in the world, winning critical acclaim and honors from Parents’ Choice Awards, the National Parenting Publications Association and others. With its growing collection of albums and multicultural activity kits, Putumayo Kids provides children with upbeat, melodic and culturally authentic music, enhanced by educational liner notes.
The company’s commitment to helping communities in the countries where the music originates has led to the label contributing more than $1 million dollars to worthwhile non-profit organizations around the world.
