The Kids Konserve Challenge

You know summer is drawing to an end when you see kids walking to school, backpacks strewn all over the house, and hear nearby school bells ringing.  I am sure most of you already have your children’s school gear all set, but I’m here to show you just one more thing.  I know what you’re thinking – “No, not another thing to buy!” But I think you’ll like this one, as it could save you some money in the long run while protecting your family’s health.

I urge you to take the Kid Konserve Waste-Free Challenge. Bear with me here…

You’ve all heard the slogan – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.  It’s true that our landfills are increasing at enormous rates each year, and that the average school-age child using a disposable lunch generates 67 pounds of waste per school year.

Just 1 day of lunch time trash from a school of 300 students!

You probably think I’m going for the environmental argument on this one, don’t you?  But I’m not.  Instead, I am taking another approach.

Don’t you want what’s safest for your child?  I know I do.  I go to great lengths to protect both of my children from engaging in dangerous activities, watching inappropriate shows, and being exposed to harmful substances (like smoking and pesticides) daily, so why wouldn’t I extend that a little further?  Sure, I can buy organic food, but if I put it in plastic baggies, wouldn’t that defeat the purpose a bit?  There are still toxins leaching out of the plastic into their food.

Why not invest in some safe alternatives like stainless steel?  Kids Konserve Waste-Free Lunch Kits come packaged with everything a child (or adult for that matter) would need to pack a lunch.  What does it include?

  • 1 recycled cotton sack
  • 1 handmade cotton napkin (to use as a napkin or place mat)
  • 2 round (high quality) stainless steel food containers with lids
  • 1 food kozy (a reusable food wrap for sandwiches and the like)
  • 1 16-ounce stainless steel beverage bottle (I highly suggest paying the extra $3 to get the sport top lid instead.)
  • 1 recycled aluminum name tag

These containers and kozies are handy around the kitchen, too.  I am currently using one of my containers for some leftover vegetables.  All of the components of their kits (and their entire line of products) are either recyclable or biodegradable, and are non-toxic, non-leaching, and free of BPA, PVC, lead and phthalates!

And with these cute designs, they could still have the cutest lunch bag at school!  My son loves his lunch kit, especially his bottle.  (They really are as adorable as they look, and great for adult lunches as well.)

Frugal mamas, are you thinking stainless steel is too expensive?  Granted, a stainless steel container to keep snacks in is more expensive (by a lot!) than plastic baggies, plastic wrap or foil.  But have you considered the fact that it’s reusable?  That right there saves you some money over time.

So you loose a little of the convenience of being able to throw away everything after you’re done eating, and you have to wash containers when you get back home.  Go ahead and calculate how much money you spend in those items alone during the school year.  I’ll wait right here.

Wow, that was quick!  Pretty good savings, huh?  What about the savings you’d get in not having to buy single-serve yogurts, chips, juice boxes, and other snacks?  You could purchase in bulk and save a boat load of money over the years.  Still not convinced?  Check out their nifty little Cost Comparison Chart.

Right now during their 2nd Anniversary sale, Kid Konserve is offering their Signature Waste-Free Lunch Kits for only $30 while supplies last.

Aside from the savings and the safer containers, meals packed at home are healthier (and we all know about the obesity rates in US children these days).  Personally for me, the the health arguments win over all the others (savings and environmental).

So, instead of stocking up on plastic baggies, paper napkins and individually wrapped single-serving snack foods of various varieties, invest in a pack from Kid Konserve.  And then urge your school to do the same.  Not only for the aforementioned reasons, but because Kid Konserve gives back.  If you launch a Waste-Free Challenge at your school, Kid Konserve offers a discounted rate of 15% (20% in August and September) with each online order OR that same percentage will be paid back to your school.  Read about this fundraising opportunity here.

But that’s not all.  Kid Konserve is offering all Village of Moms readers 15% off their purchases by using the coupon code “village1” at checkout from now through September 30, 2010.
