In this healthy living journey I have been on, I have been slowly (sometimes rather quickly) replacing the everyday things we use as a family for organic and non-toxic alternatives. This has included personal care products, foods, household cleaning agents – you name it. One thing we have not done is make the switch to organic fabrics. I mean, it’s not that I don’t want to (believe me, I do), especially because the amount of toxins used to grow conventional cotton is horrific. Organic fabric anything seems to be very expensive. Ideally, if I could switch over just a few things, I would choose our bedding, sleepwear, and all of the baby’s clothes.
How many of you have really liked the baby clothes that are offered as organic? To me they seem plain, perhaps cute for sleeping but nothing really wearable (especially for a girly girl). Cute organic baby clothes are just hard to find. BUT (you knew there was a”but,” didn’t you?) I found some really cute ones! Finally someone got it right.
At speesees they believe in making products that are not only organic, but also fun and fair.
s-p-e-e-s-e-e-s is the way a baby would spell ‘species’, if a baby could spell. Inspired by our animal, plant, and human speesees, the line originally began in 2003 with a series of phonetically-spelled animal species (‘chik, ‘kid, ‘see hors, ‘pup, je’ raf), featuring an animal speesees on the front of a garment and its phonetic pronunciation on the back.
speesees was born from the desire of the extremely personable owner (Rachel) wanting to create high-quality, comfortable and cute clothing for her friends’ children. I received a Blossom Tie Dress for my daughter to review (sweetly packaged with a personal note), and it’s exactly as she promises. The soft feel and the heavy weight of the organic cotton gives the dress its high-quality and comfort, while the vibrant colors and hip design make it a-d-o-r-a-b-l-e! I love this dress. Even my husband commented on the thickness of fabric (that was the first thing he noticed, actually).
My daughter wore it most recently to the zoo, and after a long, hot (and dirt-filled) day at the zoo, I had to wash the thing in hot water (which is not what I would have usually done with such a bold-colored garment, or the majority of my loads for that matter). I was a little afraid of what it would do to the colors of the dress. Many times my 100% cotton clothes come out of the washer/dryer looking worn and faded after only one wash. However, this dress looks better than it was when packaged as new. (Seriously, I am not joking.) How did that happen? I guess speesees can add “durable” to their list of “promises.”
Besides trendy baby and children’s clothing, speesees carries bibs, booties, hankies, caps, blankets, towels, washcloths, mobiles, toys, and even adult t-shirts and totes. And all are made with:
- 100% certified organic cotton
- pigment and pvc-free prints
- nickel-free snaps
- no formaldehyde
- no dioxin
- low impact dyes
- lots of love
A best seller, the Blossom Tie Dress is made of 100% interlock cotton and comes in sizes 1 yr, 2T, 3T and 4T. Pair it with cute bloomers, and you’ve got a complete outfit.
