Skuut Envy and HearthSong GIVEAWAY

If you’ve ever read my other blog, you know husband is a retired professional triathlete.  He has always wanted to share his love of bikes with our 3 year old son.  Thanks to HearthSong’s tremendous generosity, this is now a possibility.  HearthSong sent us one of their top sellers and numerous awards winner, the Skuut (pronounced like “scoot”), to review just in time for my son’s 3rd birthday.

What exactly is a Skuut?
n. An attractive (chain-less) wooden bike without pedals for young children (ages 2-5).
v. To push forward and glide with glee on aforementioned wooden bike.

How do you Skuut?
Sitting on the Skuut, kids first walk the bike forward. As they go faster they stride with feet off the ground for longer and longer periods of time, ultimately being able to pull both feet off the ground and coast. At first they tilt to one side or the other and their feet catch them like training wheels or a tripod would. Very quickly balance becomes second nature and they can coast for yards with their feet off the ground. Braking is done “Fred Flintstone” style: just put your feet down and stop.

Why get a Skuut?

The Skuut is perfect for learning balance and boosting confidence, while eliminating the need for training wheels (a crutch that can give a child a false sense of security) when transitioning into a traditional bike.

This bike is extremely lightweight and compact with a clean and striking design and adjustable seat height.  Assembly was extremely easy and took (literally) less than 10 minutes (it comes with the necessary tools as well).  Our once (too) cautious child is starting to be confident in his balancing skills after just a couple of short days on this bike.

Our little active man LOVES his new bike!  He is sure to be the coolest tot in town, as other kids will definitely have “Skuut envy!”  Thank you, HearthSong for making his birthday a special one!
