Summer of Green

Hello, and welcome! Good to see you here. I’m Helga, from Live Green Mom. I’m a 40 year old married mom to an 8 year old girl and a 6 year old boy. I live in Boston, Massachusetts. I could really do without the winters here, but I am loving the summer!

I started Live Green Mom this past December because I knew I wasn’t the only mom out there struggling with trying to implement a greener, more natural life for my family. It isn’t always easy and sometimes I want to just go the easier route. However, I’m learning, right along with all the other moms on the same path, and it’s encouraging that so many moms are right there with me.

Let’s talk about ‘going green‘. It’s a phrase you have heard quite a bit lately, and it isn’t going away. Everywhere you turn, everybody and everything is being touted as ‘green’. Cars, cleaning products, homes, furniture, clothes, foods, toys, I could go on and on – the list is long. It can be overwhelming. The reports coming out about why we all need to be ‘greener’ can also be frightening, from global warming to chronic health problems,it can make you want to bury your head and never read the newspaper again.

So perhaps you’ve come to the point where I was a few years ago. You want to ‘green’ the family & your lifestyle, but you don’t know where to start and it can feel like it is insurmountable, this task.  I am here to reassure you that it does not have to be that way.

Like my father-in-law always says when faced with a huge project that he doesn’t always want to tackle, “How does one eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” And that is how you must approach lifestyle change like this. One step at a time.

My motto is ‘small changes add up’ and I believe it applies to many aspects of life. You could also phrase it another way – small steps over time equal great strides.

I started recycling and composting kitchen scraps a few years ago, but that was all I did. I did notice that as a result, my family of four only produces one 13-gallon bag of trash a week. Barely. I think that’s pretty good! It got me thinking…

Last year I began to experiment with natural cleaning products – vinegar, baking soda, Borax. I am a woman that enjoys a clean home and the ‘fresh scent’ that came from cleaning my home with Clorox bleach spray, Pine Sol, etc. I thought that if others could smell it, they would know how clean my house was. Through my research I found out that that clean smell really meant toxins all around us, harmful to our health.  I was thrilled to find out that there are plenty of natural, safe and effective alternatives. It didn’t take me long to weed out the chemical cleaners from our home.

Now I have moved on to organic foods, less processed foods, getting rid of a majority of plastics in our home, and cutting down on one-use products, like paper towels and napkins. To name a few!

There is so much I can’t wait to share with you this summer, your summer of green! There isn’t a better time, I think, than when your children are around and start to pick up on these changes. It invites a discussion about why you are making these changes, and it is a good time to encourage the little ones to help you out with these changes. My daughter loves to catch her little brother leaving a light on, she gleefully pounces! Don’t even get me started about when Daddy – gasp! – leaves a light on from time to time (nobody’s perfect, trust me!) and my kids catch him!

Small steps, small changes, they all add up to something BIG over time. No better time than now!
